So... one of my favourite bands, though actually not a rock one. They started in a somewhat Pink Floyd way - quite successful debut album, followed by departure of then-leader Vince Clark. I personally don't like this one, songs here are kinda childlish and irritating. Among 80s' albums, I prefer these led by Martin Gore, all of them, starting from Construction Time Again, with the peak at Black Celebration. Dark, atmospheric, absolutely brilliant album.
The best, what Depeche Mode gave us, are the 90s. That's when they took guitars, mixed synthpop with rock and provided themselves world-superstar status. All three albums from the decade (Violator, Song Of Faith And Devotion, Ultra) are masterpieces, especially the middle one, based mostly on "regular" instruments.
The 21st century's albums are mostly unsung, at least in Poland, where I live. I believe, there's not much to run down here. These are still good, quite experimental, non-schematic records.
