I think Ian Gillan's solo career has been largely overlooked in the U.S. From the fusion leanings of The Ian Gillan Band to the straight rock/metal of Gillan I dare to say his solo stuff is as good as Blackmore's Rainbow or Whitesnake.

LOL @ the person who said David Lee Roth. His solo stuff blows even harder than Van Halen, something which I thought was impossible to achieve.

Paul McCartney.....without a doubt the most successful as a solo artist.

next would have to be George Harrison then Eric Clapton.

Honorable mention to Peter Gabriel and Robert Plant.
