A lithograph is a planographic or surface printing process that depends on the chemical aversion of grease and water. This makes certain parts of the surface accept the ink and other parts reject the ink.
Correct. That very same "ink and water don't mix" principle, however, is also the basis for offset-lithography, which is what I was suggesting.

My use of the term "lithographic print" was in leiu of saying "printed poster", as in a poster printed using standard offset lithography, as opposed to limited-run lithographs which are numbered and signed. Sorry for any confusion. :)

But it would still be nice to know if this black and white poster (including the signature) has a dot pattern in it. Obviously it isn't numbered so that should say something about the piece.

I might as well add my unsolicited two cents...

elitelegends- I understand your enthusism that you may be in possession of a valuable piece of art, but are you sure what you have isn't merely a black and white lithographic print from a production run? If you look at the poster under a magnifying lens, is there a small dot pattern which the eye can not otherwise see? I'm not trying to burst your bubble either, just trying to help you acertain what you have to begin with. Can't tell if it's a charcoal sketch or a print from the pic you posted.

Actually i am looking for honest opinions , and i have no preconceived notions about how much it's worth ...

It could very well be a reproduction and it would not hurt my feelings one bit if it was but with the lack of info or photos available one must ascertain that there is a chance it could be rare/valuable

trust me there is no bubble to burst but honestly it's hard to get anyone to pay attention to a thread like this w/o having some sort of enthusiasm

I beg to differ Hep.. That's a printed poster.. A litho is pretty much like a silk screen..

I respectfully beg to differ Thumper. A silk screen, or the screen printing process (actually silk hasn't been used in decades) is quite the horse of a different color compared to Offset Lithography. Ink thru a stencil is not ink from a printing plate produced from a negative image. Fine art screen prints or Serigraphs tend to have a higher value due to the labor intensive process of printing each color individually after the previous color has dried, or cured. Some serigraphs may contain 1-10, 20 or more colors to replicate any given piece of art and the edition run is usually low, anywhere from 25 - 500 pieces including artist proofs. Most are limited editions with the squeegees being hand pulled or printed on a semi-automatic flatbed press utilizing a vacuum table to hold the substrate (paper) in place.

Can't tell much from the Jim jpeg but it appears to be a common offset litho poster, worth 5 or 10.00. Like Dave78 said, look for the dots, or halftone screen pattern to get technical. The paper is a factor as well. Of course it could also be a digitally imaged print from a large format ink jet printer which produces it's own mechanical print pattern evidence.

It's a nice B/W drawing rendered with relative art skill but if it was an original, it probably wouldn't be in that cheapy poster frame. Original graphite drawings (or portraits) can range from 25.00 up to 250.00, more if it from a name artist/illustrator.

At least some on here know the difference between a litho and a silk screen..
I'm familiar with both.. so it wasn't a call on my part to say it was a silk screen etching..
The original most likely is a pencil drawing..
Other than that.. it's a nice picture worthy of artistic talent...:cheers2
