Personal Information:
Birth Name: Joseph Michael Kramer
Born: June 21, 1950
Current Age: 60
Zodiac Sign: Cusp of Gemini and Cancer
Siblings: 3 younger sisters
Began Music Career: At age 14
First Band: The Medallions
Instrument: Drums

Biography:

Joey Kramer was born in The Bronx, New York. He first began playing the drums at age 14 and joined his first band when he was 15, The Medallions. He got his first drum set, a Kent 3 piece set, by trading his mini-bike. Later, his father took his drums away from him since he didn’t care for the noise, and he borrowed drums from a classmate, Steven Tallarico. This early musical bond laid down the tracks that would last these two friends for 4 decades. Tyler was also a great coach for Joey in Aerosmith’s early years. Joey and Steven frequently have fun together in the studio:

Joey, a friend of Steven Tyler, was asked by Tyler to join up with him, Perry, and Hamilton in 1970, since the young band was in need of a drummer. Of course, when Joey was asked to join the band, they weren’t called Aerosmith; in fact, it was Joey who named the band Aerosmith. Joey has become one of the strongest members of Aerosmith over the years, often times being known as the voice of reason. When Tyler and Perry are in their “toxic” moments, it is often Joey who sets the two straight. Joey was also the band member who did the “Banking” for the band, collecting money that was owed to them. Joey is the band member with the least song writing credits. His biggest song writing credit goes to “Pandora’s Box” from the album “Get Your Wings”.

Joey Kramer has been the rocking chair for Aerosmith’s sound since the band began. He has created the drum tracks that has sustained the feel and sound for Aerosmith, which IMHO is just as important as the man behind the microphone or the man playing the guitar……….but we often forget how much of a key ingredient Joey has been all these years to Aerosmith.

A Kickass Drum Solo

The only side project Joey has ever undertaken was with producer, Marti Frederiksen. Joey has contributed over 340 drum sound loops for a series of CD’s known as “Celebrity Loops”. These drum beats and sounds are out there for anyone to sample and use.

Re: Aerosmith September 2010 Band of the Month

Aerosmith, a historical time line:

1964: Tyler forms a band, Thee Strangeurs, then changes the band name to Chain Reaction. It was during this time he co-wrote the song “Woman of the World” with Chain Reaction’s keyboardist, Don Solomon.

1969: Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, and Joey Kramer are part of the blues band “Jam Band”. The Jam Band and Chain Reaction both perform gigs at Sunapee, NH’s “The Barn”. This is when the union between the two band’s members began.

1970: Aerosmith is born! Their first performance was at Nipmuc Regional High School in Mendon, MA.
The band members move to Boston, MA and share an apartment at 1325 Commonwealth Ave.

1971: Ray Tabano leaves Aerosmith and is replaced by Brad Whitford. At this point in time the band is unsigned and is earning approximately $300 a night for gigs.

1972: Aerosmith now have David Krebs and Steve Leber as band managers. The band gets signed to Columbia Records for a $125,000 recording contract. The band goes into Intermedia Sound Studios to begin recording their first album.

1973: The self titled debut album is released. The band begins its first big tour to support the “Aerosmith” release, opening for bands like Mott the Hoople, The Kinks, Hawkwind, and Mahavishnu Orchestra. “Dream On” gets the #1 song rating from Boston radio stations.

1974: The 2nd album, “Get Your Wings” is released and goes Gold. The band continues to tour while their show venues become bigger and bigger.

1975: “Toys in the Attic” is released. This album would prove to be the album that sealed Aerosmith’s fate to become rock stars. The band is receiving a lot more media attention. Aerosmith is now a big headline act, performing for a crowd as large as 80,000 in Pontiac, MI. The band begins to party heavily.

1976: The band now has their own recording studio, called the “Wherehouse”. They record and release “Rocks” and the album goes Platinum. Aerosmith takes on a 58 city concert tour of the USA and also tours in Europe. As tour pressures mounted, the band begins to rely more and more on drugs and alcohol to fuel them.

1977: “Draw the Line” is released. This album immediately goes Platinum. The band goes to Japan and Europe on tour as well as the USA. The “Draw the Line” concert tour would last all the way through 1979.

1978: “Live! Bootleg” is released. Tyler and Perry get named “Toxic Twins” because of their hectic lifestyles and drug abuse.

1979: Aerosmith begin to slow down. Constant touring and a hectic lifestyle the last 7 years has taken its toll on the band. The band begins to work on “Night in the Ruts”. Right in the middle of recording this album, the band has a major dispute and Joe Perry leaves the band. Jimmy Crespo is hired to replace Perry. The album is released and the band begins to tour with Crespo.

1980: Brad Whitford leaves the band. Aerosmith’s Greatest Hits is released. Tyler is seriously injured in a motorcycle accident leaving him hospitalized for 2 months.

1981: Tyler spends most of the year recovering from the motorcycle accident. Rick Dufay is hired to replace Whitford. The band begins recording “Rock in a Hard Place” with Crespo and Dufay on guitars.

1982: “Rock in a Hard Place” is released. The band tours for this album through 1984.

1984: It was Valentines Day, Perry and Whitford visit Aerosmith back stage at Boston's Orpheum Theater. The band heals its old wounds and makes the announcement 2 months later of a reunion and following tour, “Back in the Saddle”.

1985: The reunited Aerosmith sign with Geffen Records and release “Done with Mirrors”.

1986: Aerosmith enter into the recording studio with Run DMC for a hip hop mixed cover of “Walk this Way”, and finally gain chart success again after being off the music charts for almost 6 years. This cover also gave Aerosmith a new generation of listeners. Drugs have still been a plague to the band, therefore, Tyler is first to enter and complete drug rehab.

1987: “Permanent Vacation” is released and goes triple platinum. The band goes on tour with Guns n’ Roses.

1988: Aerosmith wins their first MTV Music awards for best Group Video and best Stage Performance in a Video for the song “Dude Look Like a Lady”.

1993: “Get a Grip” is released. This album was aided by commercial songwriters brought in by management, which has led to claims the band ‘sold out’. The band takes on an 18 month “Get a Grip” world tour.

1994: Aerosmith tour Latin America for the first time. Aerosmith also star in their own video game, Revolution X.

1997: “Nine Lives” is released. The band’s autobiography is released, “Walk This Way”. The 2 year long “Nine Lives “ world tour began.

This tour had 56 shows, and grossed the band $43,578,874.00 which puts this tour in the top 10 for highest grossing concert tours in history.

It is really hard for me to choose between Rocks and Get Your Wings as to which album is my favorite. Usually I choose Rocks first just because the music is pure, raw, Aerosmith and "Back in the Saddle" just seems to be the main Aerosmith anthem song

I live in Buffalo, NY
I had a 50 percent off coupon at Borders but it had to be in-store only (Not online). I was having trouble finding something I wanted so I decided on the Pandora's Box Box set by Aerosmith. I had it on cassette back whenit first came out but Cassettes were always a pain in the butt & easy to lose. I forgot how much I enjoyed that set especially their cover of Helter Skelter.

Now I'll be on an Aerosmith Kick! (It would be nice if they'd release Video Scrapbook on DVD about now!)
