I don't remotely buy that Madonna's British accent is "fake", and I don't either understand people's fascination with this, and why it is so often used as a point of criticism of Madonna, as if her somehow developing a British accent is about one notch up from her living with a bad dose of syphilis. Her and Guy Ritchie (who by the way is the descendent of a long line of British aristocrats) were I think together, either as partners or as man and wife, for over 10 years, and for most of that time they lived mainly in England, so it's not unreasonable to assume that during that time she would lose at least a good part of her Michigan twang, and she would begin to sound quite British...not a lot different in actual fact to a person who grew up in Lancashire England, then spent 17 years living in Washington DC, USA, and started to lose his British accent and begin to pick up an American one probably within about 18 months to 2 years of arriving there (er, that would be me!)

^^^ That part of my post was a joke, hence the 'grin smilie'.

I didn't especially mean you Jackie, I would never - for my own sanity - argue with the only other Springsteen fanatic around here, yikes!!!! I've noticed it quite a lot just in general around the www how she supposedly has a fake British accent, maybe she just wants to try to speak nicely in Shakespeare's tongue!! Btw ever noticed how 99% of British pop/rock singers all sing with a put-on American accent? In fact apart from Damon Alban of Blur, Ian Dury, Morrissey, Liam Gallagher, maybe a couple of others, I can't think of many that don't.

^^^ I didn't take it as arguing. ;) And yeah, it's funny how British singers sing with no accent. Look at the Beatles...to me they have heavy speaking accents, yet when they sing there is none.

Robert Plant circa. 1970 - 1975 was at the time maybe the greatest singer on earth, but the gross 'Americanization' of his singing voice was I thought extremely odd, and he was one of the worst culprits of singing with a very pronounced 'fake' American accent (he's originally from the Birmingham area, England)...

^^^ But is it really fake or is that just the way it comes out with a melody? I've never really thought about it being fake.

Being from the Windy City, I remember when my sister moved to Arkansas. The first time she came home...I was like....:pullhair:...cause she was all...."Hi Y'all"

She lives in Chicago land now and has again for years and years and years and no Arkansas dialect

:grinthumb

I'll have to pay closer attention and see if Madonna's accent really does come and go. Never really paid attention to it. But if it is fake...though it seems a bit twisted is no big deal to me. :cheers2

Well seeing as how, what, like FOUR of her videos were banned from MTV for being too sexually explicit I don't think she should be speaking out against the middle finger thing, but I also get the point. She promised the show would be clean and family friendly and that was really the only thing that held it back from that, though it's not really her doing so she wouldn't worry and it speaks more negatively for the person who did it rather than her.

Yeah Sound... I will never understand the fascination with her fake accent. I see it mentioned so many times all over the net and IRL. I swear it's like people just want something to complain over and it's getting a little ridiculous and I laugh each time I see it (which has been a lot)! :oyea:

And I think what Soots was trying to say the other day in regards to the Madonna hate on the forum is that, yes... we're all entitled to discuss (positively or negatively) an artist but the recent mentions of Madonna over and over (and over) on a classic rock forum seem to be out of place when we could be discussing awesome rock music! :) I agree that if I don't dig on an artist I wouldn't want to dwell on it and it's not really worth getting worked up over but it's fine! No one will attack anyone here for their preferences and it's great that we can all feel comfortable here to share our views but the negativity over Madge was worse a few months ago and now it seems I've seen more positive comments. It's been a pretty civil conversation though and that is a good thing. :cheers2 :)

Trouble is I think within the context of a forum like this is that there is some misguided expectation and belief that a thing like the Super Bowl half time show should be aimed exclusively at an audience of 'rock music' fans....who probably these days represent only maybe 10% of the entire record buying/concert going public worldwide...so the idea of presenting a purely pop act with a genuinely global appeal, and somebody who is a household name in pretty much every country on earth (such as Madonna) is anathema to most 'rock' music purists, which I can understand to some extent. I bet if somebody ran a poll on CRF asking who should play at the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics next summer....Beyonce Knowles or Van der Graaf Generator, Beyonce would get like 3 votes.

Couldn't have said it better myself m'dear! :cheers2

Funny thing MP... the majority of my life was spent growing up in rural Michigan. When I moved to Texas I picked up the dialect pretty quickly. It's almost subconscious. I still say "y'all" and I never say "pop" over "soda" anymore, but I've lost a lot of that Southern drawl I picked up over the 9 years I lived there.

With what has been said over and over and over again here is that this is not just a classic rock forum. So if there is a thread about Madonna or any other pop star or country star or rap star or whatever here, it will be discussed. Madonna has been the topic of conversation more lately because of this whole Super Bowl thing. Besides, I think she thrives on controversy and being talked about both positively and negatively and it's what she looks for.
