Up Up Up
Artist: GIVERS
Album: In Light

GIVERS' "Up Up Up" is nothing but the purest sunshine and happiness that you can expect from the indie pop genre. Raspy female vocals trade off the lead with quirky male ones make harmonies and there are bells and tambourine that make it very playful and fun and there is reggae guitar and thick sounding synth and all of this other amazing goodness rolled up into one song. It's just an enjoyable, well put together, accessible song.

Set Fire To The Rain
Artist: Adele
Album: 21

GASP! Not "Rolling In the Deep", am I mad?! No...or at least not anymore than normal. You see, "Rolling In The Deep" became a hit last, December and was actually released the November before so it's a 2010 song in my book. Yes, it's a technicality but who's running the show here? ;)

"Set Fire To The Rain" is actually the first song that made me take notice of Adele. I'd heard a couple of her songs before such as the previously mentioned "Rolling In the Deep" and "Chasing Pavements" but there was just something more painful about this song that snagged my ear so much more than her other songs did. Aside from obvious cliches that come from an Adele song like it being emotional and big there is a very lush string arrangement underneath the music that gives the song a very sweeping feel to it that compliments the commanding vocals from Miss Adele all together.Plus the lyricism walks a very fine line between being completely epic and utterly melodramatic, the latter plaguing many of her songs so it's great to only have touches of it for this song. What makes this song work so well for me is it's balance.

Forget "Rolling in the Deep", Harmony. I'm just glad someone didn't mention "Someone Like You"! My apologies if it's later on in the countdown. ;) This is by far my favorite Adele tune thus far and I'll gladly listen to this or "Turning Tables" over the other two so this is a fantastic choice. You're right all of Adele's tunes are over the top (in a good way), larger than life, very dramatic and epic and this is no exclusion. I also love how Adele has the ability to make her listeners feel her heartache (let's face it this is what a lot of her songs are about at least on 21) or whatever emotion she's trying to convey. It makes her very relatable and personally I have a hard time finding artists I can connect to on that level and that's why her music is so special to me! I look forward to seeing what, if anything, she has in store for us in 2012 because she's on fire (no pun intended) and can't be stopped IMO! :cheers2

(Unless she does a Rebecca Black cover or something)

Um....no. :D

Really I would rather listen to most of "21" over "Someone Like You". I get it, it's this sooper emotional, stripped down piano song and pop radio had a void of that after "Jar of Hearts" stopping getting airplay. There are just other places I'd much rather go to get my fix for that kind of song. I still really like "Rolling in the Deep" though. I'd heard it for a while on my favorite independent radio station and thought "Yeah, that's a pretty good song", and then suddenly other people knew about it and I found out that apparently it had became a BIG BIG deal. :D

I agree 100%. It's also a great song to wake up to. It's like "Wake up up up! You're going to have a delightful, cheery day even though it's snowing out and not all nice out." :heheh:

Lonely Boy
Artist: The Black Keys
Album El Camino

I think we're a bit overdue for a raw rocking, rolling song so to remedy that we have The Black Keys' "Lonely Boy". It's a fast paced, radio friendly rock song that makes you want to dance, hopefully a bit better than the guy from the cheap music video though. ;) Musically the song is based around a pretty simple guitar riff that makes use of a foot peddle to quickly drop the guitar out of tune in rhythm and very guitar sounding key boards to drive the song along. You really can't analyze it much more than that because it's a pretty straight forward song.

You and I
Artist: Lady Gaga
Album: Born This Way

This is a Lady Gaga that I want to hear much more of. The piano and guitar driven "You and I" is easily my favorite song she has ever put out and part of that is probably because it sounds like it could have been written by a dozen other people but it still kicks major tush.
All of the elements of the song are turned up to the max with the signature "stop-stop-clap" of "We Will Rock You" and roaring guitar making the song sound tremendous (for a pop song) with Gaga giving a great vocal showing as she sings her little heart out and the unmistakable guitar sound of Brian May screaming in during his solo and in between lyrics. (And if I may go off the subject a bit I think it absolutely fantastic to hear Brian's playing on a genuinely good, new song since he hasn't put out much material over the last decade and all of the song he's guested on haven't featured him quite as prominently as here. As one of my favorite guitarists it a real treat to hear him like this).
Also lyrically it's a song about love that I can actually believe. It has the right amount of ups and downs in describing the relation to make it sound real but still quite sweet.

Options
Artist: Gomez
Album: Whatever's On Your Mind

Gomez is a group that I have been following on and off for some time now but with the release of their song "Options" they have gotten my full attention. Musically and vocally the song sounds very much like T. Rex and that is something I couldn't be happier about. It's very raw sounding with acoustic guitar and couple saxophones making up the majority of the music and electric guitar filling out a couple spots here and there and elevating the chorus a bit more. The lyrics and overall mood of the song are my favorite things about it though. It's very optimistic (which seems to be becoming a theme here) with the moral of the song being that no matter what happens in life you will always have options, a theme that resonates with me personally.
