Re: Elton John

One very often overlooked album of John's that, I think, deserves much more exposure is his very early live 11-17-70. My nephew, who grew up in the post-Caribou era didn't believe me when I told him John had been at heart a real rocker. He changed his mind about him after hearing this stripped-bare rock'n'roll record.

Re: Elton John

Very interesting, no one I knew had this one, but seeing it was before my prime collecting years that's not surprising. I'll see if I can find an MP3, I haven't seen it in FLAC in my travels...

Re: Elton John

I did something similar to a co-worker back in the '80s when the "minimalist" rock movement was afoot, with groups like the Bodeans, dBs, etc. This guy claimed to hate the Beatles, so I made a minimalist mix tape to listen to in the drafting room and included "Anna" from Please Please Me because a) it fit into the "minimalist" mold well, and b) unless you know the recording, you might not immediately recognize it as the Beatles. He actually liked the song and was mildly embarrassed (and irritated with me) when I told him who it was.

He was also the one who, after one listen to my "Real Gas Music from Jupiter" tape that included the Violent Femmes' "Country Death Song," told me, "don't ever play that here again." :D

It's a sneaky, yet effective way for people to get egg on their faces. :D

For a while there I think he had a real knack for choosing closing tracks. "High Flying Bird," "Burn Down the Mission" and "Harmony" were nearly perfect in that regard.

Agreed. All of Elton's closing tracks have a strong sense of finality to them. "Harmony" will always have a special place for me since that song is a small part of where my name came from. Upon first hearing that name through this song I just thought "Hmm....that sounds right...."

Re: Elton John

It's missing a number of my favorite songs....like how can, of all things, there not be "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"?
