I haven't been in the forum(scene) all that long,Joined my first one in 2011 so Im probably way off base.
In the little time iv'e been on the few that Im a member the observation Iv'e seen is that the only reason one would die off is loss of intrest by its members&staff&the Owner
If the Owner of the site decides to say the hell with it then its over.
There has to be an interest in the the theme of any forum weather it be music/art/cars-all kinds of them out there.

I couldn't trust a site that begins by saying:

"Join the Party! Play music and videos with friends and others from around the world.

plug.dj only uses Facebook, Twitter and Google to log you in. We promise to never do anything lame like share your personal information with a third party.

We are people just like you and we value your privacy as much as our own. By using Facebook, Twitter and Google, it's one less username/password out there for you to have to remember.

Please read our Terms Of Service for more information."

There is a state of flux going on right now though MP. Many forums(music) that I used to know are dead or dying right now. While we are still doing alright there has been a fundamental change in online habits, due in no small part to what gadgets folks use now instead of sitting in front of their computers which we have talked about in depth already.

Attracting and keeping people interested has always been the challenge for every forum I've ever seen or posted in...doesn't matter what it is either the same pattern emerges after a while.

What's new is something Lynch alluded to, the sheer 'laziness' of a generation now, composing something coherent and sitting down to do something other than sending crap text messages to your posse' seems to be too much of an effort.(Some exceptions of course like the dedicated intelligent young folk who post with us.;) ) I'm pretty sure emergency workers/families/work related texts make up the vast minority of traffic on the mobile universe the rest are not essential.

Magic and I have been here for over 4 years, the place is stable but I'd be less than honest if I didn't admit I always wanted a bigger membership, to keep the place humming almost by itself was always one of my goals.
