When GFR decided to add keyboards to the band, that is when people took notice of GFR. Amazing how adding Craig & Keyboards made the band become popular.


I agree, Caught in the Act is an awesome live album



I have the DVD Live at the Forum, Los Angeles, 1974 which is a really good DVD.

"Caught in the Act" is one of the greatest live collections ever recorded.The Who's "Who's Last" collection is a close second.Any live collection that has me singing while I'm alone in the car def rates high on my rock 'n' roll scale.
I know some of you are gonna hate this but my fav three GFR collections are:
1) Survival
2) We're An American Band
3) Born To Die
I saw their tour back in '97 at the Beacon Theater in NYC,and I thought it was a show from 1971.
(showing my age here) I saw GFR at Shea Stadium when Humble Pie opened for
them. It was one of the highlights of my rock 'n' roll life.

Which was their best album of the early seventies?

I had a friend who had a Grand Funk Railroad album in the early seventies, which was pretty intense with long organ-dominated tracks. I cannot remember the album title or song titles, but I think the the cover was red, white and black. It may have been a different cover for the UK market and I cannot track it down anywhere, including Google images. I do remember that it was before their commercial period of The Locomotion, which sounded like a different band.

Could it have been the red album?

I checked Martin and from what you are describing it sure fits the ST "Red" album released in 1970.

I always liked Mark Farner's band, my favorite GFR track is "Bad Time".

I'm surprised this one hasn't been posted yet. Maybe it was mentioned but I didn't see the video. It's one of their well known tunes, and is "epic" by definition because of its length (about ten minutes).

I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home


I read up on this song and found it interesting the many different interpretations of the song's meaning that people have thought up. Everything from drug use to antiwar to having its theme compared to Homer's "Odyssey". Nonetheless it's a great song and I love the bass.

I agree - it's one of their classics. And the bass line is killer. I've had the pleasure of playing it quite a bit in cover band situations through the years and it's always a fun tune to play. Mel Schacher was an excellent bass player.

The "Red" album simply called "Grand Funk Railroad"was my introduction to this great band.It has "In Need" "Paranoid" "Got This Thing On The Move" and "Mr. Limousine Driver" on it,these are the tracks that stand out. They do two of these songs on GFR's fourth album "Grand Funk Live" in which the versions get extended and sound like the true form of rock 'n' roll.They do "In Need" & "Paranoid" on this album and contribute to the rest of this great live album.Many years later(1997)on the live album for Bosnia,they do "Mr. Limousine Driver" which has always been one of my favs. Too bad they are having such difficulties working together,it would be great to see them live again. Mark Farner does tour with a great band of his own,and he's still got it. If he comes to your area - it will worth it to see him perform. I saw him last year here in Red Bank along with some other acts from that period,he stole the show.
