Re: Billy Joel vs. Bruce Springsteen

I would dispute that last comment. Bruce did get a little lost in the 90s but since his return to recording with the E Street Band, he has released 3 albums that are just as good as his 70s and early 80s output.

The Rising, Magic and Working On A Dream are all excellent albums and while Devils And Dust might not be as good as those three it's certainly better than Nebraska or anything he released in the 90s. I might also add that all 4 of the above albums reached #1 on the US charts.

Um I'm sorry, but Nebraska is probably his best material. Devil's And Dust was meh compared to it.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Nebraska to me is almost unlistenable. Just a shade better than the Ghost Of Tom Joad imho.

Bruce tried to step out of the box with Nebraska and even more so with The Ghost Of Tom Joad. Definitely my least favorite albums but I do give him credit for trying something different.

I agree that Bruce is still putting out good music after all this time of being in the business. The Rising, Magic and Working On A Dream were all good albums. I know the show will go on for Bruce even without Clarence, but I am wondering what the first album without the Big Man will be like creatively for Bruce.

I much prefer Bruce's early work myself, similar to Bob Seger who went really laid back later in his career. I give Bruce credit for following his muse wherever it took him, but for me I thought The River marked the turning point for him.

I haven't played his later stuff enough to form an opinion.

I too appreciate his early stuff more. But I think that holds true with most artists.

^^I just enjoy him when he's Rockin' more than when he's sittin' on the porch telling stories. Exactly the same with Seger, when you play "Live Bullet" and then "Against the Wind" it's night and day.

I don't have Nebraska, but I do have Tom Joad and The Rising, but haven't listened to them more than once....never enough time to get around to everything.

Check out The Rising more when you get time. Some rockin' songs on there. :grinthumb

I put it on my list JG...:hab:

And RS, you should check out Born To Run, if you don't like that record, then you won't like Springsteen.
