That's why it's called a ROCK forum.

This.

Oscar. We all know you have a passionate opinion for Soul. But going on and on about it instead of posting threads and posting in topics that has to do with Soul music really doesn't do you any good. You've posted in your blog, and that's fine. But if you want people to talk about it in the forum, create threads.

The "Everything Else" forum would be perfect for it, and if enough interest, threads, and conversations comes from it, than perhaps that would lead to a sub forum for Soul. But for right now, there just isn't enough interest for it.

The voting thread clearly stated the singers could be from any genre. But what I really don't get is the nearly complete disconnect. It's not as if we're talking opera here. There's a pretty big overlap between soul and rock, both in time period and in artists that can fall into both categories.

You don't think that Wilson Pickett is rock and roll? How about Sam & Dave? Sly Stone? Guys like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye certainly fall under the rock umbrella. Rock isn't just a bunch of white guys.

It doesn't? Posting in this kind of thread generates a lot more responses than posting in a thread about soul music. I'm not trying to tell people what they should like. I simply made an observation that not a single soul artist made the top 50 in this poll. That's pretty remarkable, considering the number of deserving soul singers there are and since some of the very best soul music was being made right at the height of the classic rock era.

It doesn't do any good considering the top 50 singers have already been tallied, so saying there aren't any soul singers probably isn't going to change anything. It'd be better to make a thread strictly dedicated to soul singers and soul music. It'd get a lot more responses than this thread will.

I'm not trying to change the outcome of the voting. I assume the the results are posted here so people can comment on them. Are we all supposed to just "ooh" and "ahh" over the list? The observation I made was fairly obvious or should have been.

Considering the response I've already gotten here, I doubt it.

And the forum is clearly a rock forum--what did you expect, Lawrence Welk and Liberace on the list? I don't know 75 percent of those dude's tunes. And I personally don't care if they have "rock" elements in their music. I like real rock, not rock influences, aside from blues guitar. And "I's powerful sorry" but, "Rock," aside from the aforementioned blues guitar influences is indeed white guys (yet another thing I can feel guilty about, and as far as guitarists, I voted BB King and Buddy Guy as players in my top ten) The guys you mentioned are NOT rock--that is a fact, so there is no justification in crying foul because they weren't included.

I like guys that rock, that's why I'm posting on a rock forum. And as far as artists being culled from any genera, I threw in Dean Martin, and Morrisey on my list of 10...Dean Martin is hardly rock...Would Sammy Davis have been more to your liking?

And I'm also not saying "soul" influence is bad. I love a blues based rocker who plays or sings with soul (Jake E Lee or David Coverdale for example). Soul is indeed a great element in rock music, but this is a rock forum so we got a list of rockers. I doubt posters on a soul forum would be bitching Eddie Van Halen, was not getting recognition for doing a solo with Wacko Jacko.
