It happens though and it happens a lot. For Levee, the folks I mentioned wrote/recorded that back in the 1920's. I'm sure if anyone heard the original they'd have no clue wtf it was compared to the Zepp version. You can find it on Youtube if you are interested.

Another favorite cover of mine. If I'm not mistaken, this song was originally written for Nina Simone.




I also love Santa Esmeralda's cover of this too. Say what you want about disco but this is a pretty rockin version.

I know it wasn't Lead Belly. I"m pretty sure I looked that up at one point and it dated back to some old folk tune. Not sure if there even was a writing credit.

Surprisingly that I do happen to know. The original comes from blues artist Leadbelly.

It's funny that we're talking about this because there's a TV troupes page titled "Covered Up," which talks about how the covers are so well known that no one knows who originally recorded the song.
