Re: King's X

Ogre Tones(2005) is a great comeback album for the Texas trio. The songwriting is in back in form , Tabor's riffage is massive, great harmonies and very good production. The lyrics show the band in confrontational reverence of spirituality and religion with an introspective changing view than thier earlier recordings. This album is quite intense and aggressive focusing more on hard rock though there is prog present with some instrumental passages combining odd time signatures. Obviously the band was motivated for this release.

Joe -

Just wanted to say thanks and good job with all the King's X posts. I haven't had much to add but I've been reading your posts. You've been doing a good job of giving an overview of their career. I mostly agree with your assessments of their albums. I think their peak was clearly the Gretchen/ Faith Hope Love albums. After that I was totally onboard with most of their stuff until Mr. Bulbous. That one fell flat with me and ever since I've really liked a few songs from every album but it hasn't been as killer as their early stuff.
I saw them about a year and a half ago and they're still an awesome live band.

^^^Thanx a million. I appreciate that.:grinthumb

I plan on doing some posts on each member's solo material as well as thier other collaborations. Ty Tabor has done many.

Living on a relative small island and outside a relative small city(350,000) we don't get many concerts, so I doubt if I will ever see the band live. But hey, one never knows.

Re: King's X

King's X continues somewhat similar in sound to thier previous release with XV from 2008. All three band members wiegh in on the album with no bad tracks what so ever.

Where does the band goes from here? All three members do have active solo projects going with guitarist Ty Tabor just releasing another solo album. We'll have to wait and see.

I agree with Runtfan wholeheartedly Joe, doing a first class job on your thread, I have been reading but don't have any of their albums so my contributions are from the bench for now.

I will seriously try and get a copy of "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska", so far no luck.

Re: King's X

This is one band who I unfortunately never had enough recordings from. I used to play them on the radio steadily, at least based on the limited records I had, and I always enjoyed their music.

The albums of theirs I had/have are Dogman and Gretchen Goes To Nebraska. I also have a couple movie soundtrack songs of theirs, one of which was in a Bill and Ted movie, I believe.

King's X is pretty good. They're an odd band in that they're from the US but HUGE in Europe and not that well-known over here in the states.

Thanx LG.

You'd probably remember this song as it reached #6 on Billboard in 1990:

Who's the monkee? Don't answer that. I don't want to know.

Re: King's X

Ty Tabor together with bassist John Myung(Dream Theater), keyboardist Derek Sherinian(Dream Theater, Planet X), and drummer Rod Morgenstein(Dixie Dregs) recorded two albums, When Pus Comes To Shove(1998) and Ice Cycles(2000) is more of a jazzy prog sounding King's X than sounding anything like DT, Planet X or the Dregs. Well done but not essential.

Re: King's X

The Jelly Jam is basically the same band as Platypus without Derek Sherinian on keys and takes more of a classic rock guitar sound with very little prog direction. The first album, The Jelly Jam(2002) is more instrumental jamming than thier second release, 2(2004) which takes on a melodic approach. The band is due out with a new album some time this year.
