Artists who didn't get the respect they deserved until after they died?

I'd disagree with this. Michael Jackson got a TON of respect in the 80's and into the early to mid 90's for his status and musicianship as a pop star. Probably more than any other artist ever has. It calmed down in from about '96 to present due to the fact that he came off as being pretty nuts and put himself in some really messed up situations (not going to go into specifics, save that for another thread).

Yeah, I'm with Lynch on this. I'd be hard pressed to come up with anyone who got more respect in the 80's. And he was a grizzled veteran with tons of hits under his belt a long time before Thriller made him a world wide phenomenon. Due to his increasingly erratic behavior as time went by he became as much a curiosity as a pop star but he always got plenty of respect for his talents. The attention he's gotten after his death has just been a resurgence but not to the level of attention and popularity he had at his peak in the 80's.

Back on topic, Jim Croce is the first to come to mind that became more respected after his death.

I think a lot of people came to admire Kurt Cobain after he topped himself - sure, Nirvana were huge before that, but I think Cobain's popularity at least doubled after his death.

Roy Orbison was only just starting to regain respect for his career after a slump when he died :wa:

I totally agree about Warren Zevon.

Nick Drake got lukewarm response throughout his brief life but his legend grew as time went on. Quite a few musicians cite him as an influence. After the Volkswagen commercial, he exploded. He is now getting the respect he deserves.

Didn't Michael Hutchance commit suicide after he split with his girlfriend?

Lynch has summed up my feelings for MJ, he was on top of the world for a long time, and got plenty of respect while he was actively recording and touring. When he stepped back then all his "Quirks" were bound to get attention, after all we live in the age of the news byte, who cares if anyone actually does any in-depth research or gathers factual information anymore, the more spectacular/insidious the tidbits, the more rabid the media and fans seem to become.

Warren Zevon,,,I am not sure I never really thought he was that great of a performer myself, and again he basically killed himself with his alcoholism and wild lifestyle, I just have a hard time giving respect to people that have everything and yet still throw it all away, but as Lynch said that is fodder for another thread.

I'll have to respectfully disagree, LG.

There's no question Zevon lived hard, a choice I don't personally understand, and, like you, when it contributes to squandering of talent and shortens someone's life span, I have little sympathy. But I doubt that anything lifestyle-related caused the mesothelioma that killed him. I can't see that his life was any more dissolute than say, Keith Richards'.

I am sure his lifestyle didn't help him, although I had forgotten he died of mesothelioma Craig.

Have you seen the two movies about Joy Division TL? I thought they were both really good, and I was a little chagrined when I realized how influential JD was even though I never bought any of their albums or New Order either.

Ian Curtis was a tragic figure for sure, I don't know what I would have done in his place.
