I have seen other members state that they think they will "get hammered" or "get trashed" in voicing thier honest opinion in regards to a another's thread on a band, genre, musical style and structure, etc. on the basis that they have a different view on that particular musical subject that the member has posted and made comments on his/her likes/dislikes of some aspect of music. (Man, wasn't that a long sentence):D

So I decided to a do a poll on this subject(oh no, not another joe poll:heheh:). You can just vote and make no comment. Vote and voice your opinion. Tell me to go to hell. After all, you're free to say anything you want.:grinthumb

(remember,you're vote will be anonymous)

My answer can't be summed up in an option. I have strong feelings on this! :)

Agreed! This is a place that celebrates music! When I make a band thread, especially for a band that most people have heard and have already formulated opinions, I'm looking for a kinship of fellow fans. Why would I need to hear that someone thinks they aren't worthy of the status I give them. How can you debate "like/love"? Let's say I enjoy something fun for me like Black Eyed Peas and I make a thread. Let's say some hothead elitist comes in and waste their rage towards the group on me and tries to tell me they aren't worthy because they have in their opinion simplistic beats, retarded lyrics and isn't real music. First it'll equal one of two things for me. One, I won't agree with him no matter what he says. Two, I'll agree and say that's what I like about them. The end result? Nothing's changed! Space wasted except for an ego boost they might get from entering the thread and circumventing hot air. It's one thing if it's a topical thread and it asks for criticism. Then people going in know what to expect. It's fair game and I don't think anyone fears that here. If they do they shouldn't. Our rule is insult the band not the fan. I hold no pity for those that don't know the difference. It's not rocket science. Anything else is called trolling. If you can't critique a band without saying why and that they suck then you aren't capable of rising above trolling. A good respected critique will dissect elements that aren't generalities and earn more respect from the person seeing their band critiqued even if they don't agree. All in all what seperates us a s a forum is our level of respect here and commendable lack of trolling. I wouldn't have it any other way. As far as forums go I trudge through the muck of way too many elitist, trolls and morons to finally end up here! :grinthumb

The bolded sums up my feelings perfectly:grinthumb

We allow anything to be said as long as it is respectful.. If you want to go into, say.. http://www.classicrockforums.com/forum/f8/official-311-thread-10778/ or http://www.classicrockforums.com/forum/f6/official-foghat-thread-10064/ and say something like "This band sucks! I don't have any clue as to why someone would listen to them at all.. they do not make music and shouldn't even be discussed in a music forum." That won't fly at all... And, there's not much point in going into a thread just to say "I don't like them." Even if you have something to say, like "I had a friend that loved this group, I don't like them though." There's at least a purpose for going into the thread and it isn't insulting to the people that are fans of the group...

CRF is as great as it is because we(all members) have respect for the forum and everyone here

"I give my indifferent opinion in regards to the music, respecting other's musical preferences"

First off I agree with everything Soot says.

I do take music pretty serious & yesterday I made a comment on possibly getting hammered on & the only reason I gave my honest opinion was because it was a poll of a specific album so I gave my opinion not wanting to offend any fans. (Polls are basically asking opinions). It wasn't a bashing I was trying to do

Had it been a thread about a specific band praising their accomplishments I never would have said anything negative because that thread was put there for the fans & to bring on board new fans to the band. I'm not sure if I ever bashed a band on their own thread (I hope I didn't!) but when I do see someone writing a negative comment it turns me off so I'm always careful not to.

Exactly! A negative comment in a thread can derail it for mindless people who won't listen for themselves to see their actual opinion because they base opinions off of what others say and just about anything else BUT the music. What's written in the band thread itself is advertising but let's be honest, the writeup is for the thread starter to give what he feel is the proper tribute. What the viewer needs to do is simply click on the vid and that says it all. If they like it they can read more into it but we are missing the point if we focus on details and not the audio to mind to soul part. Music is not to be intellectualized. What we lie is instinctual and is part of our heart and soul. Check the analytical brain at the door and we'll all be happier! :grinthumb

I am able to offer my opinions, whether they are negative or positive, and not insult the music fan. This is what I call "mature" and constructive criticism. I have stated many times in member's threads that I don't care for a particular vocalist or that vocal style or that a certain sound just doesn't appeal to me.

I also make it my practice not to insult a certain culture of music. Sometimes a certain genre of music becomes a lifestyle. For example: Country. I am rooted in the south, it is a way of life for me. I enjoy southern rock, the blues and blues-rock, and country music. I have seen country music trashed on forums, and the fans raked over hot coals. It isn't fair to do that to someone who enjoys that music, just because it may not be anothers choice of music to listen to.

It is my belief that people can talk about their music likes and dislikes without resorting to name calling and personal insults. Negative criticism is good as long as it doesn't go to a personal level.

Well, honestly, I always give my honest opinion of things regardless of whether or not it might offend people.

However, most of the time I hope that people understand my most scathingly negative opinions and rants are largely sarcastic.

I agree with all of the above and there is nothing I can add that Soot, eberg and Magic haven't already said.

This forum is pefect the way it is. We are here to have fun and check out music (I've been turned onto and purchased plenty of music I haven't had yet because of this forum)...not a full day of your band sucks and your band sucks.

There's no fun in that.

Voicing an opinion however and backing it up with reason is the most logical choice. :grinthumb

If it's a band/album thread for someone who I really don't like...Madonna, Kanye West I simply won't post in it.(With the only exception to make a humurous remark.;))

Magic and I have talked about this for quite some time over the years, and we both agree nothing is worse than just posting "They Suck!, or that record should be burned to ashes and scattered on the high seas to prevent it ever being listened to again, or the fans of this artist must be mentally challenged or intoxicated..:D).

However when someone takes the time to explain what they don't like about a band or album, and only comment on the band themselves and not the fans, then that is fine with me, after all it would be a pretty boring universe if we all liked the same thing or had the same thoughts.

No one will get "Trashed" in here for expressing their views in a respectful manner, outright insults/trolling/flaming is a different matter altogether and will get an official reaction from us.
