Re: The Yes Thread

Finally got around to playing the newest Yes album, and it's good. I am not sure it'll ever rate with their early classic records but it was better than I thought it would be. Benoit is just close enough to Jon without trying to copy him which is good there will never be another Jon Anderson when it comes to his voice and Yes.

Those who know YES music through the years might enjoy this take on it.
It's a montage of YES highlights through the decades. The whole piece is about 40 minutes. I think there might be a clip of the whole piece somewhere on youtube.
Here are two portions of it

Drama/The Buggles?

In some ways yes. Drama was a good album however both albums from The Buggles were not to my listening preference now and back then. Plastic, shiny, futuristic synth pop/new wave/prog pop. A prelude to the sound that would dominate the early/mid '80's...sadly.

I can hear both Drama and to a lesser degree, the pompous pop production that Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes produced with The Buggles. However, credit is due when credit is deserved as both producers don't put Steve Howe and Chris Squire in the shadows as has happened on some occassions in earlier incarnations of the band, most notably in the '90's. From what I hear, Howe is the show on this album with Squire not far behind as both are allowed to shine.

Downes' keyboards take a back seat and are basically a back drop on most tracks though there is the occasion spot light placed on him. A good decision. Alan White's drums are basically irrelevent. I guess it was his turn to be in shadows this time around.

IMO, David Benoit does a pretty good job. Hell, can one really compare him to Jon Anderson? Yes and no. Though very similar in vocal sound and style his vocals become somewhat become monotonous and don't have the inspiration and range that Anderson's has. Not easy coming in to fill those big shoes. He does an admiral job.

Well worth the $5 for the download but I wouldn't put out $15-20 for the CD. Disappointed? No, not really though I didn't have big expectations to begin with.

^^I bought "Drama" when it came out, played it two or three times and literally never bothered with it for decades afterward. But a few months ago I dug it out and listened to it again and it was alright, nothing earthshaking or on par with their best work but much better than I remembered it being.

I'd forgotten about the "Buggles" connection Joe, been a long time since I thought about them.:D

This morning .. picked it up then put it down, picked it up again, put it down again then started talking to the record shop owner. Realised the time and whipped off to pay my road tax and forgot to get the cd. Looks like next week now. The tickets for the gig are a bit expensive so I think I'll give it a miss as I've got a few other concerts coming up, otherwise I would have gone along to check Benoit out.

This is the best live version of Long Distance Runaround I've ever heard. I ripped it from the 35th anniversary DVD.

Enjoy. :grinthumb

A couple of classic tracks off the Time And A Word album, as trippy as it gets IMO.
