i thought he was mentally ill....and i guess drug use had taken its toll on him, but frm what i gather, he either was really far off the deep end, or he was just sick.....you guys know better than me tho

had no idea about this......guess they were all at fault, sad to see, but i haven't seen many major band that weren't marred by big egos

I believe it was a combination of Syd's mental health and according to what I remember he took too much LSD, and that was what ended his time in the band. Masher will be able to provide more details when he shows up.

"Pigs On The Wing" Algie the pig balloon escaped and drifted off over Kent. There should have been a pro rifleman on hand to shoot it down but they had forgotten to book him. Algie eventually landed in a farmers field safe and sound. :cheers2

yeah thats correct, it was his live performance that made the band retire SYd. He was showing up on LSD and would just play one note over and over again.

From what I heard, I think Rick Wright wanted to go on Holiday, because Roger Waters was telling him what to play and not play, being a control freak in the studio. Something that never really happened before in the past. (or not told in such an abrasive way). I guess there's so many sides of this story, who knows?

But, over the years, most fingers point at Roger Waters.

    Sad.

I think today, Roger Waters realizes he was being a dick, but so many years had passed, it was hard for others to forgive and forget, or maybe there were still things going on, that the public just doesn't know. Anyway, that's just my take on things. I was really hoping after Live 8 Concert, back in the summer of 2005, they would all work and play together again. But you could almost see and feel ''the wall'' between Waters and the rest of the members of Pink Floyd.

Roger Waters gladly accepted Richard Wright's request to be one of the Producers. He just simply lost faith after 6 months of recording and Rick had done nothing to contribute. I used to place all of the blame on Roger, but it was merely a little issue, that blossomed into something large.

Guys, I honestly recommend you read both:

Amazon.com: Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd (9780306817526): Mark Blake: Books

    and

    http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Side-Moo...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276118187&sr=1-2

Together these books cover 90% of the bases and you WILL read things you never knew about.

    Throw in:

    http://www.amazon.com/Inside-Out-Pe...=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276118577&sr=1-8

and you have everything you need to know. But on top of these, I have tons of magazines, old interviews, etc saved.

As in regards for Syd, he was found to be Schizophrenic after a few months of taking LSD. This is when Roger was "Blamed for not watching out for Syd". But prior to this diagnosis, no one knew. Most people rip on Syd's work with Pink Floyd or scoff at it and it is a damn shame. If you have the Mono Version of Piper, his Esquire is doing more than folks think it is on the Stereo version. After all, "Gilmour had all of the blues records and chords learned and taught most of Cambridge", including Syd. You hear A LOT of similarities between the two.

If Pink Floyd ever wins Best of the Month. I'd GLADLY assist whoever starts the thread. Most would probably know a lot of it, but bits and pieces would be read for the time.

If you have a Pink Floyd question, I more than likely could answer it on the spot over beers. So basically, on here I'm not even searching. The same goes for The Beatles, Queen and Zeppelin.

I never discount Syd's contributions or make light of his medical condition. I just like the band more later on in their career.

I do however have an ongoing argument/discussion with an old friend who will always say Piper was their best album period, at that point I always have to refute his opinion and make my case for DSOTM...it's all in good fun though.

If Pink Floyd wins our Band of the Month contest, which is more than likely one of these days, you are more than welcome to do the entire thread yourself.(Saves me the effort of doing it, plus I would have to read all the background info you posted to make sure I covered everything, and I'm getting lazy in my elder days Masher.:D)

One man's mentally ill is another man's musical genius.

yup, but i heard even the rehersals were troublesome.......basically, Gilmore didn't want anything to do with Waters....and acc. to wikipedia, they talked to each other after almost 2 yrs when Waters called Gilmore to persuade him about the concert.

    Hmmmm, interesting...
