@joker1961, your list is great, but I do think bands like Oranga Goblin and Monster Rock are more stoner rock than doom and Down is more sludge. Not important mind you.

I'm gonna go with pure doom, which means stuff like classic Paradise Lost, Katatonia and Anathema, which was more a mixture of death metal and doom are not going to be on my list (They would have made the top 5 otherwise).

As the pioneers of the sound that influenced the Doom genre I don't really put them in that category or they would have been my number one.

With all due respect gentlemen I consider Sabbath's first four albums as traditional doom as I do their latest release, '13'.
