Here's a thread idea I haven't seen! It's easy to like or dislike an artist from the start but with time as a fan OR a detractor it's curious to see how some skills develop throughout a career. Now with experience people can improve but especially with vocals age can also be a factor that can negatively effect the same vocal especially with the rock. n' roll lifestyle making things that much worse. Anyway, I thought of this thread a while back while reviewing the new Pearl Jam album. I've always loved Vedders vocal but I can understand the garbled marble mouth comparisons. However with more recent albums he's far more disctinct with better diction and is a master harmonizer for his range and has a great tone. Songs like "Sirens" definitely show his acquired improvement. Who are your picks? :grinthumb

A bit controversial, I know, but I would say Robert Plant has worked very hard at finding a place in the 'rock world' post Led Zep and he has a much more mature vocal these days, which can slot in to various genres of music.

Geddy Lee for my money, the difference when you listen to "Moving Pictures" compared to RUSH's first 3 albums is amazing, he really matured into a fine rock singer.

Good one! :) I wouldn't say controversial but he definitely surprised people in recent years with the Alison Krauss album. Maybe it was controversial before but not now for anyone who pays attention to music. :grinthumb

I really like Paul Rogers more now than when he was younger. His voice is far more macho and stronger these days than when he came onto the scene decades ago.

I feel the exact opposite. He went from really unique and exciting to almost banal staring with Permanent Waves but really accelerating around the time Hold Your Fire was released.

I can't think of a single singer who got better later on.

Offhand my choice would be Glenn Hughes....sure he was fine with Trapeze and Deep Purple but his work since then with Tony Iommi/Sabbath and Black Country Communion etc has been outstanding

he was the first person I thought of. He still sounds great, smooth as ever.

If Glenn Hughes is already here, I'll say about John Fogerty. He still sings his old songs in the original tones - and doing it really good.
