I rate Fair Warning a perfect 10
One of Van Halen's heaviest albums.
All the 6 DLR era Van Halen albums are instant classics

I think Fair Warning has both some of EVH's best and most underrated riffs as well as some of Roth's best vocals.

"When Push Comes To Shove" is one of the best tracks VH has ever done IMO

I'd personally rank Fair Warning second only to VH I

Re: Fair Warning

This was the beginning of the end for David Lee Roth's first tenure in VH. He wanted to continue with light hearted party rockers

This is the exact reason I gave this a 6.

DLR's clowning was beginning to take it's toll on me as well as Eddie.

It was starting to show on W & C 1st, with the 'line runs up the back of the stocking' stuff. It was kinda funny. Once.

That whole 'prom queen' stuff just wasn't VH to me. Not funny any more, just cartoonish.

I know a lot of people thought it was ok, maybe even thought it was cool, but I never cared for it.

DLR was barrelling towards his solo career with the big red nose & floppy shoes. He was turning into a parody. Of himself.

Everything he did was an event, and everywhere he went, there was a parade along the way.

Fair Warning has a lot of crunchy, mean guitar work on it. If not for the DLR antics, I'd have given it a 7, maybe even an 8.

So Sammy took his place and they continued with more light hearted party rockers

Except they added more keyboards and less screams.

Nobody ever mistook VH for Rush. With or without DLR

i give it a solid 10
it's without a doubt the 1 album that sticks out like a thumbnail full of coke
i like all the albums, but it's #1 in my books
it's dark, it's angry, and it's got a touch of not being serious
maybe the Push Comes To Shove song is the filler of the album being it's more laid back and mellow. but that's alright. you got to take the turd with the gold.
maybe this also had alot to do with playing this album and cassette alot growing up as well.

Started to listen to VH at 5150 so am more accustomed to Sammy then Dave. Wanted to really listen to this CD from song to song and make a proper rating for my taste.

Title/Rating/Comments:

1: Mean Street/8.0/Excellent first song.
2: Dirty Movies/7.0/Interesting and unique VH type interludes
3: SinnersSwing/5.0/Great music very bad lyrics to me. Ruins a high score.
4: HereAboutIt Later/8.0/Cool arp patterns and vibe. One of my fave VHsolos.
5: Unchained/10.0/One of the best VH riffs of all time. I love detuned guitars.
6: Push comes to Shove/4.0/Sounds like a recycled 70s song.
7: SoThisIsLove/6.0/Its good VH.
8: SundayAfternoon/5.0/Experimental stuff is kind of tough to rate.
9: OneFootOutTheDoor/6.0/Good VH.

BonusPoints:5.0
There are some very cool guitar riffs and solos. I do like the 'dark' side of the music/production and give some extra 'points' for that and the uniqueness they were able to achieve. That makes it more memorable. Not my overall fave CD. Probably 5150. Otherwise, Fair Warning is an incredible CD and one of the better DLR era VH.

OverallScore:
SongTotal: 59.0
Bonus: 5.0
RatingTotal=64.0 / 9 = ...............<<7.0>> GREAT!

:yay:
