That's my big problem with the digital age too...I hate the idea that physical copies of various media are going obsolete.

I rue the day when I won't be able to walk into an independent bookstore to get a book, or a record shop to get a vinyl, or DVD/Blu-Ray. I like having a real copy of things.

Just think, in the worst case scenario, if your hard-drive/iPod/ebook/whatever breaks or gets stolen, your entire collection is gone. How do you deal with that sort of thing?

I'm the same way with books too. Part of the enjoyment of reading is holding a book in your hand. And don't think I'm weird but I love the way books smell. I've noticed in bookstores that hardcovers are less and less. But I refuse to buy an eReader unless it becomes necessary.

All a matter of preference really. Some like the convenience of being able to have your collection in the palm of your hand. I know when I'm on the go I like to have my files with me, and there are always plenty of ways to back them up and you can even do so online instead of with a hard drive and even so it is still stored on your computer and Apple lets you sync your iTunes on up to 5 devices so you could just transfer it.

The lost/stolen/broken thing... I guess you could say it'd be no different than having a flood or fire and losing all of your hard copies, except with digital you have the ability to back them up. Also most of these expensive gadgets have insurance plans and I know the Nook plan covers theft.

But in another 10, 20, 30 years they'll come up with something even more extravagant and we'll be yearning for the days of yore with e-readers and iPods. :D

It's all good as long the electricity stays on, :heheh:.

I can read a book in the sunshine.

:heheh: I suppose that could be a drawback. Just keep it charged up beforehand and you'll be good. :grinthumb

Pros and cons to both. My mom's a huge reader and she always shunned the idea of an ereader but this year she wants one. Said she got tired of having to take books with her on her trips so she wants to keep some of them on her tablet.

Kindles etc. are nice Portable devices if you want to read on trips etc., but I will always prefer a hard copy book in my hand.

Carl Sagan one of my personal heroes said it best in his epic series "Cosmos":

"I will always be completely amazed that I am holding in my hands a book that was written over 2,000 years ago, it's like Magic to be teleported back in time to when Aristotle wrote his masterpieces." Books and the accumulation/passing down of knowledge are what got us to this point as a species, without them we would be lost. To give them up completely for a gadget that only offers convenience and is battery powered and subject to failure makes no sense to me.

Do not Ever stop printing books, we have cuneiform tablets written by the Babylonians from about 4,000 years ago that can still be read. I don't think we will ever invent an electronic device that can accomplish that feat.

So let it be written.....so let it be done....:D

Sorry, but I cannot imagine curling up on the sofa with an e-reader. It's only real books for me.

I can't and infact don't really want to imagine a world without books, and as far as music goes I will hang on to my Vinyl and CD collection and deal with like minded people. I honestly have no interest and want no part of this new "cloud" alternative that seems so imminent.:D
