This is where I got my information and who I credit for it,Read Full Story Here: Tom Petty Blasts Modern Country Music

Here is a summary:

During a interview with Rolling Stone Magazine today (August 5th), Petty gives his opinion about today's country music, the genre that he says helped make The Heartbreakers.

“I don’t really see a George Jones or a Buck Owens or any anything that fresh coming up,” Petty continued, “I’m sure there must be somebody doing it, but most of that music reminds me of rock in the middle 80s where it became incredibly generic and relied on videos.” Petty named no names and called no certain sound out before dropping the topic. “I hate to generalize on a whole genre of music, but it does seem to be missing that magic element that it used to have,” he went on “I’m sure there are people playing country that are doing it well, but they’re just not getting the attention that the s—tier stuff gets.”...

Thoughts?

one could say the same thing about numerous genres of today's music, not just country music.

Agreed, but I believe why Tom Petty aimed his sights Only for the country music genre because of The Heartbreakers having their roots come from Classic Country and him seeing Country (In his opinion) turning into "Bad Rock with a Fiddle" is eating him up.

Doesn't surprise me that TP has a dim view of the majority of "new country" that dominates the genre. Basically he's criticizing the 'soft rock' of the 80's is my take, guys like Cristopher Cross etc. and although I pick and choose what new country artists I listen to I can't really blame anyone for moving over from the rock arena to try and have a successful career.

There will be a resurgence of old school artists eventually, just look how successful the soundtrack to "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" was not so long ago.
