1994 Papa John Creach died of heart failure at the age of 76. Creach was a fiddler who first came to the notice of Rock fans when he joined Jefferson Airplane from 1970 to 1972. A veteran of Jazz and Blues groups, he was in his early 50s while his fellow band members were still approaching 30.

2003 Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers bass player Howie Epstein dies at age 47 after a long battle with drug addiction.

1956 Police in Cleveland, Ohio enforce a 1931 ordinance that barred people under the age of 18 from dancing in public unless accompanied by an adult.

Johnnie Ray, the 1950's teen idol, died of liver failure at the age of 63. He scored over twenty US Top 40 singles between 1952 and 1960, including the number two hit, "Just Walking In The Rain". He was even referred to in Dexys Midnight Runners' 1982 hit "Come On Eileen" as Poor old Johnnie Ray, sounded sad upon the radio, he moved a million hearts in mono.

Elvis Presley's former personal physician, Dr. George C. Nichopoulos, passed away at the age of 88. Known as "Dr. Nick", Nichopoulos was Presley's doctor for eleven years before the singer's death from heart disease on August 16th, 1977. The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners later suspended and ultimately revoked his medical license after it ruled he had over-prescribed potentially addictive drugs to thirteen patients, including Presley and fellow rock 'n' roller Jerry Lee Lewis.

1942 Manfred Mann singer Paul Jones is born Paul Pond in Portsmouth, England.

1943 George Harrison is born at 11:42 PM. For years the ex-Beatle thought he arrived at least 18 minutes later and that his birthday was the 25th.

1947 Bassist-vocalist Lonnie Turner (Steve Miller Band) has a birthday.

1950 Bad to the bone. Guitarist-singer, George Thorogood, is born in Wilmington, DE.

1973 The Byrds play their final show. After the Passaic, NJ concert frontman/leader Roger McGuinn pulls the plug.

1988 At a concert in Phoenix, Alice Cooper claims he is running for governor of Arizona, representing the "Wild Party." (A special election was being held to replace Evan Mecham, who had been impeached.) Cooper's slogan: "A troubled man for troubled times."

This Day In Rock History: February 25th


1972, Led Zeppelin appeared in front of over 25,000 fans at the Western Springs Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand, the group's first ever gig in New Zealand, (and the largest crowd ever to attend a concert on the island). A special train was chartered from Wellington to bring fans to the concert. News reviews the next day reported the band could be heard over five miles from the Stadium.

2011, Susan 'Suze' Rotolo, died from lung cancer. She was the one time girlfriend of Bob Dylan, and the inspiration of some of his early songs. Susan appeared in one of the decade's signature images, walking with Dylan arm-in-arm for the cover photo of his breakthrough album Freewheelin Bob Dylan.

1993 Toy Caldwell, lead singer for The Marshall Tucker band on their 1977 million seller, "Heard It In A Love Song", died in his sleep at the age of 45.

This Day In Music History: February 26th


1932, Born on this day, Johnny Cash US country singer, songwriter who was considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he is remembered as a country icon, his songs spanned other genres including rock and roll and rockabilly and blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal won Cash the rare honor of induction in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. During the last stage of his career, Cash covered songs by several late 20th-century rock artists, most notably 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails. Cash died of respiratory failure on September 12th 2003, aged 71.
