1940, Born on this day, Smokey Robinson, singer, songwriter and producer who with The Miracles had the 1970 UK & US No.1 single 'The Tears Of A Clown'. As a solo artist Robinson scored the 1981 UK No.1 & US No.2 single 'Being With You'. He became the vice President of Motown Records in 1972. During the course of his 50-year career in music, Robinson has accumulated more than 4,000 songs to his credit.

1948, Born on this day, Toni Iommi, guitarist with Black Sabbath who had the 1970 UK No.4 single 'Paranoid'. The bands self-titled album was voted as the best British rock album ever by Kerrang! in 2005. At the age of 17 and on his last day of work in a sheet metal factory, he lost the tips of the middle and ring finger of his right hand. After attempting to learn to play right-handed, Iommi instead strung his guitars with lighter strings and made thimbles to extend his fingers.

1980 - Bon Scott, the lead singer of heavy metal band AC/DC, died in London at the age of 33. He died as a result of choking on his own vomit after drinking heavily.

1985 - Mick Jagger released "She's The Boss" in the U.S. It was his first solo album.

1995 - Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) and Pamela Anderson were married.

1943 Lou Christie ("Lightnin' Strikes") is born in Pennsylvania.

1948 Mark Andes, a bass player who does stints in Spirit, Firefall, Canned Heat and Heart, is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1950 Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash is born in London.

1954 Francis Buchholz (bass guitarist for Scorpions) is born in Hannover, Germany.

1958 The Miracles release "Got a Job."

1966 Lou Christie electrifies the charts when "Lightnin' Strikes" hits #1.

2009 Kelly Groucutt of Electric Light Orchestra dies of a heart attack at age 63.

1946, Born on this day, J Geils, American guitarist, with The J. Geils Band who had the 1982 US No.1 & UK No.3 single 'Centerfold', which was taken from their US No.1 1981 album Freeze Frame. On April 11, 2017, Groton Police conducted a well-being check on Geils and found him unresponsive at his home. He was pronounced dead from natural causes at age 71.

1951, Born on this day, Randy California, guitarist, singer with Spirit, who had the 1969 US No.25 single 'I Got A Line On You', and the 1981 UK No.40 album 'Potato Land'). He died on 2nd January 1997 when rescuing his 12 year-old son after he was sucked into a riptide in surf off Hawaii.

1967, Born on this day, Kurt Cobain guitarist, singer, songwriter with Nirvana who had the 1991 hit 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Their 1991 album 'Nevermind' spent over two years on the UK chart. During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with heroin addiction, illness and depression. Cobain committed suicide on April 5th 1994. Cobain has been remembered as one of the most iconic rock musicians in the history of alternative music.

1975: Alice Cooper released his first solo album Welcome to My Nightmare which went on to reach number five on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and sell one million copies in the U.S.

1982: Pat Benatar married her guitarist Neil Giraldo on the Hawaiian island of Maui. It was Benatar’s second marriage & they’re still married to this day.

1986, Metallica released their third album, the highly influential album, Master of Puppets, considered by many in the metal community to be the best metal album of all time. This was the last Metallica album with bassist Cliff Burton who was killed when the group's tour bus over-turned in southern Sweden while touring to promote the album.
