Soot and Stars
I AM SOOT!
Third Eye Blind
are a severely underrated group. Now granted I may be influenced by my best friend who's waved there flag for them as much as I've waved the Smashing Pumpkin flag since we've shared music anecdotes as far back as high school. Picture that folks! So yeah, I have some schooling on 3EB and you know what, they deserve it. I saw them live back a couple years ago and I saw an audience connected to a whole catalog of songs, word for word and enthusiastic as any audience I've ever seen. At this moderate sized venue I saw a band that had all the limelight it needed regardless of current status as their audience hooted, hollared and stomped their way until they got three encores. So even without my avid fan of a friend I saw this band play an awesome show live and it was an experience I won't forget.
So why does this band still capture the same spirit now as it did with the same fanbase when the debut came out in 1997.
I believe it's because they are a band that has the balls to play some of the sweetest, confectionery pop rock hooks in existence while mixing a little punk rock mentality with dark subject matter in their lyrics that radio would run from if it wasn't to good to pass up.
I know it's been said before, but how often does yop 40 radio have a pop song about doing Crystal Meth and red panties!
Semi Charmed Life
(still stays in your head to this day!)
Off of this debut also had a great single that dealt with suicide! Now this song has seen some satire in recent years but it's still a great song with great lyrics!
Jumper
Other fan classics off the debut were:
Motorcycle Drive By
Summer time and the wind is blowing outside
In lower Chelsea and I don't know
What I'm doing in this city
The sun is always in my eyes
It crashes through the windows
And I'm sleeping on the couch
When I came to visit you
That's when I knew I could never have you
I knew that before you did
Still I'm the one who's stupid
And there's this burning
Like there's always been
I never been so alone
And I've never been so alive
Visions of you on a motorcycle drive by
The cigarette ash flies in your eyes
And you don't mind, you smile
And say the world doesn't fit with you
I don't believe you, you're so serene
Careening through the universe
Your axis on a tilt, you're guiltless and free
I hope you take a piece of me with you
And there's things I'd like to do
That you don't believe in
I would like to build something
But you never see it happen
And there's this burning
Like there's always been
I've never been so alone
And I've, I've never been so alive
And there's this burning
There is this burning
Where's the soul I want to know
New York City is evil
The surface is everything but I could never do that
Someone would see through that
And this is our last time
We'll be friends again
I'll get over you, you'll wonder who I am
And there's this burning
Just like there's always been
I've never been so alone alone
And I've, and I've never been so alive
So alive
I go home to the coast
It starts to rain I paddle out on the water
Alone
Taste the salt and taste the pain
I'm not thinking of you again
Summer dies and swells rise
The sun goes down in my eyes
See this rolling wave
Darkly coming to take me
Home
And I've never been so alone
And I've never been so alive
God of Wine
Every thought that I repent,
There's another chip you haven't spent.
And you're cashing them all in.
Where do we begin, to get clean again.
Can we get clean again.
I walk home alone with you, in the mood you're born into.
Sometimes you let me in, and I take it on the chin.
I can't get clean again. I wannna know, can we get clean again,
The God of Wine comes crashing through the headlights of a car that
Took you farther than you thought you'd ever want to go.
We can't get back again.
You can't get back again.
She takes a drink and then she waits,
The alcohol it permeates.
And soon the cells give way, and cancels out the day.
I can't keep it all together.
(It's the wound, stuck underneath the moon.)
I know
I know
I know
I know
I know
I know
I know
I can't keep it all together.
(It's the wound, stuck underneath the moon.)
And the siren's song that is your madness,
Holds a truth I can't erase, All alone on your face.
Every glamorous sunrise, throws the planets out of line.
A star sign out of whack, a fraudulent zodiac.
And the God of Wine is crouched down in my room. You let me down, I said it.
Now I'm going down, and you're not even around.
And I said a no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
I can't keep it all together.
(It's the wound, stuck underneath the moon.)
I know
I know
I know
I know
I know
I know
I know
I can't keep it all together,
(It's the wound, stuck underneath the moon.)
And there's a memory of a window, looking through I see you.
Searching for something I could never give you.
There's someone who understands you more than I do.
A sadness I can't erase, all alone on your face.
