Re: Pink Floyd (August 2010 Band of the Month)

Great thread, so far...looks good, ladyislingering.

I need to pack a lunch, but I will be back to read everything....

love the Pink Floyd.

I have read Syd's biography by Rob Chapman and was very pleased to read that the other band members ensured Syd received royalties from his work with Pink Floyd until his death. David Gilmour said "we made sure the money got to him alright". Syd left an estate of 3 million pounds to his 2 brothers and sister.

That's great. :grinthumb

Sorry it took me so long to get these songs up. This is the Man and The Journey Suite. There are a few missing, such as Work, a drum and xylophone workout, that I could not find on YouTube. But this is what the Floyd sounded like live mid 1969. Enjoy!:)

Daybreak(Grantchester Meadows)

Work/Afternoon(Biding My Time)

Sleep

Nightmare

Doing it

The Beginning(Green is The Colour)

Beset By Creatures of The Deep(Careful With That Axe, Eugene)

The Narrow Way, Part 3

The Pink Jungle(Pow R Toc H)

The Labyrinths of Auximenes

Behold The Temple of Light

The End of The Beginning(Storm Signals/Celestial Voices)

Some excellent material Architect, I never even heard about that gadget before...but leave it to Pink Floyd to be on the cutting edge of concert performance art/effects. They are the best and have always had the most ingenious toys and themes of any band that has ever toured and their music fits perfectly with it all.

In this video, shot in France, 1971, at about the 15 second mark you can actually see Rick Wright operating the azimuth coordinator, whch is situated on top of his organ console.

Some stuff I found surfing Youtube earlier:

Does that marionette have a name or anything? It's seriously the creepiest thing ever.

Also, if this song doesn't just make you want to groove all night, you're probably deaf.

And this. The sickest groove I've ever heard. (and a creeper robot, at the end. eeeeek.)

Not that I usually bother checking up on some of the musicians and what they do for fun off stage, but an old friend of mine is by far the biggest Pink Floyd fan I know and he has read all the books and collected every album they have ever released.

Anyway I was surprised to learn that David Gilmour bought a P-51 Mustang fighter plane and raced it for a hobby. Their are some leagues for just that airplane and it is an exclusive club to be sure. It also reflects on his ability beyond writing great music and being one of the best guitarists of his era, being a pilot requires a lot of effort and takes some intelligence as well.

Nick Mason collects cars and races them in the Vintage series in Europe and maybe the US, I am not sure if he still does but I saw him on a Car Nut show on our Speed Channel and he has loved collecting and racing old classic sports cars for years.

I don't recall what Roger and Rick used to do for fun,,,maybe Architect can shed some light on their off stage pursuits.(Well Rick passed away a few years ago, but I still am curious what other passions he indulged in beyond music.)

Great finds on YouTube Lady! :grinthumb Live performances of The Wall from 1980-81 are quite rare and with Roger Waters set to start his world tour of The Wall this fall there have been many rumors flying around that he will release the 1980-81 live performance videos as an official DVD! Can't wait for that!

BTW the marionette in the first video is the "wife" from the Wall movie. If you've ever seen the movie you know there is a lot of animation done by Gerald Scarfe. In the live shows they took it a step further by creating insanely huge puppets that would appear at the appropriate song and hover over the wall. In the last video there is the schoolteacher(If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding!), and also there was the judge at the end during the song The Trial.

This was not the first time The Floyd used inflatables. Early on in 1971 at the Crystal Palace Bowl in London they unsucessfully had a massive sea creature rise up out of the lagoon in front of the stage.

And during their 1975 tour, they had an inflatable pyramid set to hover above the audience. However they did not take into consideration the high winds and its instability.

There also was the "nuclear family" along with inflatable couch, car and refrigerator!

As for thier off stage pursuits, David is an avid guitar collector(he owns the first Fender Stratocaster, serial #001). Both he and Nick used to have a aviation company called Intrepid Aviation. Not sure if it is still running though...

I read in Mark Blake's book, Pigs Might Fly, that Roger collected paintings and artwork and Rick was a huge fan of yachting!

Roger is also a huge fan of the English football club Arsenal!
