Wow, that's really cool. Townshend was somewhat light on the chops especially in the early years but the combination of his white hot enthusiasm and the fact that Entwhistle was basically playing all the lead fills you could ask for carried the day.
Don't get me wrong, I love Townshend both as a guitar player and song writer but without the proper combination of 'backing' performers I can hardly imagine him doing nearly as well. everyone in The Who was essentially a lead player much more like a Jazz ensembler approach than a typical rock band structure. Many other bands ran with this formula even if they had limited technical prowess.
