^I can't speak for the Yamaha but older equipment usually fetch 50 to 40 percent of their original price depending of course on the model as well as its condition and availability of related accessories. Newer ones I often see at 60 percent.

I've seen Yamaha receivers/integrated amps from the late 70's go for anywhere between $100-800+. It depends on many factors. I got lucky with the 810 I bought it for $75 on Kijiji locally last December. It's been sitting in a closet for 15 years gathering dust, when the owner passed away his son dusted it off and put it up for sale. I spent $50 getting it cleaned and checked by a friend of mine who's hobby is doing minor maintenance on old hifi equipment and it is in near mint condition.

George I agree Audiogon is a great site for upper level gear, and we have another good one "Canuck Audio Mart" very good quality vintage equipment on there as well.

If the vintage receiver or amp has been upgraded, by that I mean the power supply replaced and the capacitors as well, all the lights replaced with LED's and the electrical pots/switches cleaned/replaced, then they can go for over $1000, if that hasn't been done then they are a lot more inexpensive. I estimate it will cost me between $2-300 to get mine done, then it will last me another 20 years easily.

So I spent 2 to 2 and a half hours rewiring my system from 14 gauge Home Depot RCAs to the 10 gauge Beldens this mornin'... And I thought going from chintzy 18 to 14 was telling...well, from 14 to 10? The thicker wires...errr [LG]...cables fleshes out the sonics that much more. Ran samples of The Stones' "Hot Rocks" you hear the layers even more. It's those minute things that pop up in the presentation which you never heard before that makes listening fun.

I don't think I'll go further here...except sometime change to a more powerful amp to drive the MLs. The Parasound though does a more than commendable job but the upgrade bug is a condition of this hobby. Attaching the 10s to the bananas was a trial maxing its load. It was thick to the point were I had to keep an eye on any stray wires that potruded out... The lockdown bananas for the stats are in tight and snug. No more worries of it being shaken loose.

The spare 14s will now be used for my folks' set-up currently using 18s. Wait till Pops watches his "I Love Lucy" reruns or sits down for the NFL games...hee.

I am nearly done my upgrade cycle but you are spot on, it's like a fever when it takes hold and has to burn itself out.

Oh and you never specified what kind of new TT mat you bought, is it made of cork?

Hi Bruce. Thanks... The mat is rubbery so I can't quite tell if it is cork. Now I have to get a clamp like the one you recommended.

Edit: it is carbon impregnated polyfoam

^^I've seen those before, the one on my new TT is your basic felt...I might get a cork mat just because they look so cool.

^Hmmm...those do look unique. Sussed out pics on the net and they come in other colors other than your basic black. They even have ones with designs. Nah...gotta get the clamp!

It is really weird listening to these MLs... Resolution is great. Stereo separation is wide... The middle is filled in properly. For what its worth, the overall sound is "refined" to describe it. Mono recordings are just so there listening to early Beach Boys. Crazy how it reveals the "age" of the recording too. '60's and '70's sound is markedly distinct from the decades that follow.

Back to the "refined" thing... Will be testing these twins with Sabbath tunes this evening. Thick, fuzzy, slabs of Iommi's riffs to see how they come off. There's "bite" but now I want some "bark"...

I'm sure you'll get used to them.

My friend's Maggies always had really good midrange and crystal clear highs, but I found them...harsh at times. At least your's have subwoofers built in to carry the weight of the low end.
