Been doing some additions and subtractions the last while, part of an ongoing overhaul/downsizing/upgrading cycle I'm doing...and the very last one for me.

Anyway I put some old AR 18's on Kijiji last week for a steal at $30.00 They were my Mom's, she bought them in 1979 but somewhere along the way Dad replaced one of the old woofers with a mismatched replacement...:bonk: I have looked everywhere but can't find it because these days you can refoam any driver ever made no matter how old. Anyway if I had the original woofer I would have asked $60.00. Had a bunch of replies and one asshole told me he would offer $15.00 for the pair. I laughed and told him I could part them out for more than that easily, but was offering them at a good bargain price for a serious collector, after all I just want to find them a good home and parting them out is something I wanted to avoid. So he sent me a snotty reply..."GOOD LUCK WITH THE SALE!!" in bold capital letters.:heheh: I told him I wasn't worried, some collector would buy them and after all $30.00 was not That much money.

The next day a guy my age answered the ad, lived in the same city as me and came over and bought them. He's a collector himself, actually one of the few people I've met who has more gear than I do...:oyea:

We ending up talking stereo's for an hour, and I will keep in touch with him via e-mail after I move. Just felt good not giving the AR's to cheapskate asshole and finding a nice home for them with a collector who respects the old quality equipment.

Those old acoustic suspension speakers had a very sweet sound, because of the old paper cone tweeters. I just don't use them anymore and can't keep everything.

Plugged my little ADS 300's into my old vintage analog system today and these little speakers never cease to amaze and impress me. For their size they are among the best ever made, I replaced the woofers two years ago with Exact factory replacements with butyl rubber surrounds which will last a lifetime unlike foam which wears out in ten years or longer if you're lucky.

I was debating putting these up for sale, they would fetch over $250.00 US easily but I can't part with them I've owned them since 1979.

^^You know after posting that it reminded me of a funny thing that happened back in the early 80's when I was living in my Dad's basement. I had my massive IMF Mk IV's hooked up to my Bryston 4B, and also had my little ADS 300's ready with special adapters to handle the monster cable connectors. Anyway I was listening to Jimmy Buffet's new Album "Volcano" the day before on my mini's...and didn't unhook them like I usually do.

Enter my older brother who popped open a cold beer, looked at the album on the platter and simply turned on my system and started playing Volcano. He thought something was off, so he cranked up the volume to well over halfway on the preamp and then settled in and was enjoying the music. I got home and immediately ran downstairs and asked him "What the **** are you Doing!!...those aren't the IMF's those are the mini's playing.

:oyea: I've never been more impressed with a little speaker, they took all 270 Watts the 4B pumped out and didn't explode, didn't distort just played their little guts out. Of course I turned down the volume right away, but I've never forgotten that little incident. ADS used to build speakers for the US Navy's nuclear submarine fleet...and I know why after that experience.

This was my old amp, the famous 4B.

Brystons make a mother of amps... One thing about amps is that they NEVER get obsolete and have very good resale value if you decide to sell them. I still have this lying about:

The Parasound HCA-1206 is very configurable, solidly built with fast transients. Always go separates...

^^That'a a nice Beast George...:grinthumb
Thanks Bruce. The two nits I have is that it doesn't have an auto trigger or balanced inputs. At least, it has a detachable power cord so I can use a better aftermarket one. It is old school. Right now, I'm trying to gather funds to pick up these to mate it with:

The Parasound with a simple switch can run left and right signals in parallel with the remaining four so I can tri-amp the above speakers. What I love about it is that is so configurable. I haven't come across an amp that is as versatile.

Your ADS's look like studio monitors BTW. Very nice...looks to be in fine shape as well. Do you listen with the grilles off on your speakers?

^^That old turntable was built to last Berserker...but unfortunately the motor is not working properly in my old Technics, it can't hold a constant speed anymore and fixing it is not an option.

I missed that post somehow George...those speakers look like beauties and tri-amping capability haven't seen that before in all the years I've been collecting.

I've been on an upgrading binge the last couple months, only one piece left to get a new turntable. When that's done I'll post all the new "family" members for my music addiction.:D
