+1 for audiogon.com

I bought a high-end tube integrated there, a PS Audio power plant there, and sold my old turntable and Infinity Black Widow arm there, plus directed a friend there to pick up one of the last pairs of Meadowlark Kestrel 2 speakers like mine.

SO,,I'm watching Pretty in Pink last night and the chick actually worked in a RECORD store. Cool part was seeing people in the movie actually go thru and gaze at the LP's. To top it off, the store had a large Maxell poster in the background, just some cool shit !

My car already parks itself at garage sales, Taha :) I have never once seen anything that was better than what I currently have at a yard sale, but then I dont actually look for stereo equipment.

Rather than continue the discussion with my "Drunken" feline friend in the 8-Track thread I am posting my thoughts about spending $350.00 on an old player in here.

First Hep that is just plain insane...you can get a player for less than that. Plus then you have to buy 8-Tracks, and they are not getting any better with age, and you can't buy blanks to replace the ones you might want to keep. Buying something to collect dust is never something I do when it comes to audio equipment. Get a poster of your favorite 8-Track player and put that on your wall.:D

I would much rather buy a DAT recorder, they are hard to find though. I saw a TEAC on e-bay about three years ago that I almost bid on, it sold for about $150.00 and came with a case of blank tapes, which are really hard to find these days. That is something I would be proud to show off, and I would use it as well, not just to occupy shelf space.

But what would be the point of a DAT? In what way was the DAT technology superior to analog cassettes? And were any DATs ever issued by record companies?

Digital Audio Tape, was supposed to be the next jump in Stereo Technology...but when it hit the market Philips was already working on Laser Pick Up Technology, so before it could get established DAT went nowhere.

It offered the best bandwith/signal to noise ratio of Any of the recording/playback devices in it's time, the reason there are no Pre-recorded tapes is due to what I said previously they never had a window of a few years to dent the marketplace. The players were expensive and so was the tape.

I would rather spend $350.00 on a DAT player and muck around making my own tapes than waste that money on an extremely overpriced 8-track player I never intend to use, that is why I mentioned it Hep.

It is kind of sad in a way that the tape being made by companies like Maxell(Their S-Series is stunningly good) were the best ever offered, but it didn't stand a chance when CD-Burners hit the market.

Are blank cassettes made anymore by anyone?

I am not sure Hep, I know that some stores like London Drugs still sell them....but whether the manufacturers still make them or have just stockpiled some inventory and when it's gone that is it. You can find all kinds of good deals online for tape, I don't need any myself I have two Cases of Maxell-S blanks and all kinds of Metal and CrO2 formulations as well.:D
