When it comes to Randy California & Spirit the earlier albums don't do much for me although yeah Dr. Sardonicus is ok but I prefer Randy California's Kapt. Kopter and the Fabulous Twirly Birds album from 1972 and Randy's albums from the 1980s & 1990s
I like all of the early Spirit lps and 12 Dreams is highly rated by both critics and fans making several '1000 albums to hear before you die' lists and described as "one of the era's great underrated albums" and a "trippy masterpiece".
Sadly Kapt Copter has 5 covers done mediocre/poorly imho and the 3 songs that Randy wrote sound to me like outakes from 12 Dreams. When I fist heard it at college I was very diasppointed in it.
I've not heard his later 'solo lps' (last was 1986) but if they are as mediocre as this then why bother?
Just being honest here....I'm a fan of his playing and Spirit of course but it goes to show that bands often have a stronger group effort when together than when players go on their own.
Spirit did try several reunuion lps in the 70's but they were not as good as the earlier material imho.
Ive not heard Rapture, Tent, or California Blues when he reunited with several Spirit players. I should ck them out being an old Spirit fan.
