Spirit never received the accolades they so deserved. The original line-up was progressive and experimental incorporating psych, blues rock, jazz, funk, prog, and folk.

I have their first two albums.

Great rock band well inserted into the experimental age of the Sixties. The drummer, Ed Cassidy, came from the west coast jazz circuit.

I like very much this piece from Spirit:

Randy California's 1980s albums are worth a listen I personally like Euro/American (1982) Restless (1985) Shattered Dreams (1986) & Tent Of Miracles (1990).

Hmmm.....not sure how I missed this thread over the last 2 or 3 years but they are one of my favorite bands . Their first 4 lps are a must own ......and 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus is a masterpiece imho.
They were the epitomy of proto-prog and very talented musicians who were far better than some of their contemporaries who went on to huge fame. Randy California(Wolfe) learned some guitar stylings working with Hendrix and Ed Cassidy their bald drummer played with the likes of Art Pepper and Cannonball Adderly and others in jazz bands.
While they lost the 'Taurus' copyright lawsuit to Led Zep yers later its clear Page fist heard it when Spirit opened up for Zep before he ever wrote Stairway. The problem was that it is an old folk theme that had been around before either band so they said that even though Page heard it from Spirit it was possible he had heard it somewhere else too.
Spirit was a great band who like many others never quite got the fame they deserved.
Wiki page on them https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_(band)

When it comes to Randy California & Spirit the earlier albums don't do much for me although yeah Dr. Sardonicus is ok but I prefer Randy California's Kapt. Kopter and the Fabulous Twirly Birds album from 1972 and Randy's albums from the 1980s & 1990s

I like all of the early Spirit lps and 12 Dreams is highly rated by both critics and fans making several '1000 albums to hear before you die' lists and described as "one of the era's great underrated albums" and a "trippy masterpiece".
Sadly Kapt Copter has 5 covers done mediocre/poorly imho and the 3 songs that Randy wrote sound to me like outakes from 12 Dreams. When I fist heard it at college I was very diasppointed in it.
I've not heard his later 'solo lps' (last was 1986) but if they are as mediocre as this then why bother?
Just being honest here....I'm a fan of his playing and Spirit of course but it goes to show that bands often have a stronger group effort when together than when players go on their own.
Spirit did try several reunuion lps in the 70's but they were not as good as the earlier material imho.
Ive not heard Rapture, Tent, or California Blues when he reunited with several Spirit players. I should ck them out being an old Spirit fan.
