I'm not a big RHCP fan but I think they definitely have a place in the pantheon. One of the few rock bands since probably SRV that makes waves with more of a regular or classic kind of rock sound, as opposed to the indie/alt/punk/metal style most of the big rock bands have had since then. They're not completely retreading, like The Black Crowes or Wolfmother, they have a lot of modern flourishes but they still manage to cultivate sort of an old school mentality.
