R.e.m.

there were much more things going on in the 80's than hair metal and pop so lets talk about one of the most dominant and enduring bands to come out of this decade, R.E.M.

Murmur, Document, Automatic from the People, and numerous other great albums show how deep their catalog is, but my favorite will always be Reckoning. what are some of your favorite albums or songs by this band?

Re: R.e.m.

REM was huge when I was in college and their stuff was played constantly by some people. Drove me nuts as I was never a big fan, but it was worse than listening to classic rock radio that beats certain songs into the ground. When Green came out, Stand got so overplayed... and I think that was the point where i just had enough of the band.

There are a couple of tunes I don't mind now, but for the most part, not a fan thanks to those college days.

However, one tune I'll never turn off is Orange Crush. Liked that song the first time I heard it and it did NOT get beat to death like so many other tracks, at least not when I was listening.

So I'll give them the thumbs up for that one for sure. :grinthumb

I love early REM when Stripe just babbled the words:

Lower, Wolves 1982

Always have a spot for the early REM when I first saw them. Chronic Town,Murmer, Reckoning, Fables all great albums. I like almost everything rom the first 9 albums after that a few spoty songs.

other favorites:Carnival orf Sorts,Radio Free Europe, Shaking Through,7 chinese brothers,So. Central Rain,Feeling Gravity's Pull, Auctioneer(another engine),King of Birds, Distubance at the Heron House, Half a World Away, Country Feedback

Just letting you know T.L. I merged threads. Unfortunately R.E.M. is one of those short words that doesn't jibe with word search but at least we have a cool thread altogether for an awesome band! :grinthumb

A great band in the 80's and early 90's, they seem to have lost their mojo in the last few years. Although they have released two live albums in the last couple years that are great.

The live versions of the late 90's and 00's tracks here are much better than the studio originals..

This was recorded at a series of public rehersals for the Accelerate tour. (Both records, incidently, were recorded in Dublin). It provides loose, fresh readings of a facinating collection of hits and deep (and I mean deep) cuts.

Re: R.e.m.

I may be in the minority here, but I think by far their best material is on their first 4 albums. I like the next 3 or 4 OK, but after that I lost interest. I really liked the ambiguous nature of most of the earliest material. You could never understand Stipe's vocals (he was rumored to occasionally ask concert-goers what they thought the lyrics were, and then sing their versions). The first two records were sort of like a gothic (that's gothic, not Goth) version of the Byrds. Chimey guitars, but usually in minor keys, and when you could understand the lyrics, you couldn't really understand them.

I highly, highly, highly recommend the remastered "deluxe" editions of Murmur and Reckoning. Try to listen to them with fresh ears, imagining you're hearing this weird, dark-but-jangling music for the first time. It's impressive. Don't listen for a lot of pop hooks like they became known for with songs like "Man on the Moon," "Shiny Happy People," "Stand" and "Losing My Religion," because for the most part they aren't there. There are hooks, to be sure, but not of that kind.

Then, when you think you've got them pegged, try the third album, Fables of the Reconstruction (or Reconstruction of the Fables, depending on how you read the jacket and who's discography you reference), where they adopt a much, much harder edge and really assault you with the guitars.

Then, IMO, they blend the best attributes of all three of those records in Life's Rich Pagaent, my own personal favorite REM album. It contains what I still maintain is the best song they've ever created (and the one that Stipe said for years was his favorite), "Fall On Me."

Unfortunately, IRS (their original label) is taking their own sweet time with the remasters. Only the first two are done now, and Fables is due out this year, with Pagaent not following until next year sometime.
