I think the pigeon hole term is post punk. But like when people were calling hairspray cock rockers metal it is good for a laugh so carry on.

Post punk, pop punk, EMO, hardcore punk, and just Punk the original.

From what I can see they are all under the punk rock umbrella. As far as hair metal bands, there are quite a few of them I enjoyed back in my younger days and so did a lot of the ladies which was a Good Thing.

That may be so but there was nothing heavy or metal about 99% of it. I remember ceasing to use the term in the mid 80s because of all the cheese I was subjected to every time I said I liked metal.
