Dude, you sound like me. 90s alternative and Nu metal did little for me also. Symphony metal and Progressive metal saved my interest in metal. I also collected countless CDs and Vinyl of albums from the 60s 70s and 80s. NW and other bands similar, along with Dream Theater and similar bands opened up so many new avenues of musical exploration.

I discovered NW just before Tarja was fired. So many bands I discover then they break up or loose a member. Kinda a curse I think. LOL

For me, Dark Passion Play & Imaginaerum were a step down from Century Child & Once.

Not a major step down, but the change in style to accommodate Anette took them away from the straight Symph. Metal I came to love them for.

Still great albums though. It's an amazing, talented band no matter who's singing.

I think DPP was probably where Anette was more out of her depth because they tried to keep it as heavy as Once but include a bit more softer songs in there. Well the out of depth part was what many perceived. I tend to think she was better suited to the Imaginaerum style but she wasn't bad on DPP.

I don't consider the change in style a step down when considered bands do like to evolve sometimes and do things differently and the albums were actually pretty damn good. Maybe as far as a vocalist is concerned Anette was a step down but she is different and I think to compare her to Tarja does an injustice. If the albums had bombed or at least not been very memorable I'd agree then but they were still awesome releases in my opinion.

Ah, so it's your fault :heheh:

Unfortunately, the first real non-mainstream metal album I tried listening to was Celtic Frost-Cold Lake, which was considered bad even by the hardcore CF fans, Also, I don't think I was quite ready for nu- or death metal in the late 80's & early 90's.

But, like Matt Smith said, we're all different people all through our lives. So when I heard Fear Factory in the mid 90's, I was actually ready for something different.

The thing was, they wrote DPP before they hired a singer and wrote Imaginaerum to suit Anette.

I didn't hear that big of a difference between those 2 albums, style-wise, did you?

I don't think I consider the style change a step down in itself. But the style change, plus a singer who was not operatic quality like Tarja, puts those 2 albums below what I consider the best 2 NW albums (CC & Once).

Agreed :grinthumb The thing about Floor's vocals is that she can do a brilliant job with both the Tarja and Annette songs as she has such a versatile voice.

I need to pick up the live release with Floor. I haven't listen to it yet but hear that it's pretty
awesome.

Well yeah there is a noticeable difference in sound between DPP and Imaginaerum. lol

On another note.

Slow, Love, Slow

Great tune. Seemed like their idea of an almost bluesy ballad.

I Want My Tears Back

Awesome. One of the few songs to have bagpipes where they didn't sound overbearing.

Yeah it is a big part of why I love that album. Anette's voice was more at home on that one. Musically it is magnificent even after many listens.

I think those are Troy's Ullean pipes. Not hugely different from bagpipes, but less mournful sounding.
