Tom Petty references Del Shannon in Runnin' Down A Dream.

It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down
I had the radio on, I was drivin'
Trees flew by, me and Del were singin' little Runaway
I was flyin'

[Chorus:]
Yeah runnin' down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin' on a mystery, goin' wherever it leads
Runnin' down a dream

I felt so good like anything was possible
I hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes
The last three days the rain was un-stoppable
It was always cold, no sunshine

[Chorus]

I rolled on as the sky grew dark
I put the pedal down to make some time
There's something good waitin' down this road
I'm pickin' up whatever's mine

[Chorus Out]

LOL I was just thinking about that great song. :D

Eric Burdon & The (New) Animals mentions "Tina Turner" on their cover of "River Deep, Mountain High".

Van Morrison mentions "Huddie Ledbetter" in Astral Weeks.

Third Stone From The Sun -- Jimi Hendrix

Jimi made a cryptic reference to the Beach Boys not making it to Woodstock.

Starfleet to scoutship, please give your position, Over.
I'm in orbit around the third planet from the star called
The sun. Over.
You mean it's the earth? Over.
Positive. It is known to have some form of intelligent
Species. Over.
I think we should take a look.

Strange beautiful grass of green,
With your majestic silver seas
Your mysterious mountains I wish to see closer
May I land my kinky machine

Strange beautiful grass of green,
With your majestic silver seas
Your mysterious mountains I wish to see closer
May I land my kinky machine

Although your world wonders me,
With your majestic and superior cackling hen
Your people I do not understand,
So to you I shall put an end
And you'll
Never hear
Surf music again

Secret
Oh, secret
Oh
Shhhh...

Queen's first US tour was with Mott the Hoople, who got a name check in 'Now I'm Here'....

A thin moon me in the smoke screen sky
Where the beams of your love light chase
Don't move don't speak don't feel no pain
With the rain running down my face
Your matches still light up the sky
And many a tear lives on in my eye
Down in the city just Hoople and me
Don't I love him so don't I love him so?

Keep the Sabbath Dream Alive by The Workhorse Movement (Sons of the Pioneers). It's a great track too, from a consistent album, but they disappeared without trace.
