An excellent 80s metal supergroup that only ever put one album (Think a Priesty-Racer X type affair). We'd have some fans here at CRF, no doubt (Forgive me if the bio's a tad inaccurate, this is basically what I managed to find in ten minutes' worth of research)?
Originally formed in 1985 under the name "Driver", the band initially consisted of drummer Tommy Aldridge (Black Oak Arkansas, Pat Travers, Gary Moore, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake), bassist Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Dio), vocalist Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen, Talisman, Journey) and guitarist Kirk James (Steeler). This star-studded lineup was not to last however, as Soto jumped ship to re-join Malmsteen's backing band, and James. The band were quick to replace these two however, with replacements no less capable than their predecessors. In came vocalist Jeff Fenholt (Bible Black, Joshua, Geezer Butler Band, ED3N) and guitarist Craig Goldy (Giuffria, Dio). This line-up recorded several demos, one of which is in common circulation amongst bootleggers, the cliche titled (Albeit pretty good) "Rock the World".
Nothing official was ever released from this lineup however, with Fenholt and Goldy both leaving mid '85. Replacing them were vocalist Rob Rock (Impelliteri, Joshua, Axel Rudi Pell) and shredder supreme, Tony MacAlpine (Who also chipped in keyboard duties). Due to legal reasons however, the band dropped the "Driver" moniker, changing their name to MacAlpine.Aldridge.Rock.Sarzo. The finished product, 1986's Project: Driver album was released to moderate acclaim, but sadly the band fell apart shortly after, Rock joining Christian metallers Joshua, MacAlpine resuming his solo career, and the rhythm section of Sarzo and Aldridge continuing on with the project (Under the name "NRG") for a short time, before accepting an invitation from David Coverdale to join Whitesnake. Rock would later revive the "Driver" name several years later, alongside Roy Z.
