There are a lot, but for me, the most obvious choice when phrasing it "Substantially better than the original", I'd have to say Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do? from Frampton Comes Alive. Studio version is cool, but the live version blows it away.

I think the Live And Dangerous version is a killer and is better than the studio take on Johnny The Fox.

^^That is a belter Sox.

I like the version of "Dogs of War" from the live concert VHS tape of Delicate Sound of Thunder more than the CD track, both are good though.

I agree, that was the first song that came to my mind when I read this thread.

I'd also include most of Grand Funk's "Caught In The Act" album.

Personally, I think The Who's performance of "See Me, Feel Me" at Woodstock outshone the studio version. Both great, though. Here's both for a comparison:

The version on Live! Go for What You Know is quite a bit better (Mainly because of the presence of a second guitarist. Pat Thrall can friggin' play), but this early one also blows away the studio version, as far as I'm concerned.

This one always packed MUCH more of a punch live.
