and this is exactly why it is the most selfish thing a person can do and in my opinion, even more selfish than straight up murder of other individuals. You can't be questioned "why"; note or no note left behind.

I'll use Kurt as the example. He blows his brains out and in the process murdered his daughter's father, his parents' son, his wife's husband. His daughter has to grow up with any number of potential personality and mental issues knowing that her dad didn't love her enough to stick it out, didn't care enough about the family, friends and other loved ones that absolutely, positively cannot help her dad through tough times. Instead, without any reprocussion, Kurt says "FU world" and ends it. THAT is as selfish as it gets. On a personal note, I couldn't give a shit about Kurt Cobain, but first and foremost, I do feel for his daughter, having to grow up without a father. Suicide isn't an accident, it's intentional

Yeah, I get what you are saying, but there are countless people that excuse it for the very reasons you just stated, because they haven't been to "that place", so they say they can't judge. I say bullshit. I have never been a serial rapist or child molestor or serial murderer ... nor have I ever thought about becoming any of those things; but just because I've just never been to "that place" I guarantee you that I most certainly WILL judge those people for those actions. Why is suicide any different?

Not to belittle anyone that has had friends of family members who have pulled their own plug, I am not "preaching" on the topic without experience. I have known a number of people, including a couple of very close friends who have committed suicide. My opinions are strong, with conviction, for a reason, I've been touched by it myself. Too many times. Wouldn't wish the feelings of loss, anger, sadness and hate that I have had because of those actions on anyone, ever.

Sorry for my rant, way way off topic. Apologies.

No I think it's it's fine. I respect your opinion/stance and can relate. I won't say why at this point (as I know you are trying to end this) but it's similar to what you've said. It's one of those things I can just sum up as very unfortunate.

I'm glad that most of the bands I listen to don't have to have that aspect overshadow their music. I'm not saying that people would like certain music any differently but there's nothing more aggravating in music discussion when you want to talk about the output and you see either a huge blot like this or some things ranging from scandalous to trivial talked about a band/artists real life like music is a TMZ reel rather than someone's expression/creation. Anyway, just something that will never change that irks me.

Not sure why people keep calling it a Leadbelly song. The song is FAR older than that. Calling it a Leadbelly tune is a lot like calling House of the Rising Sun a Bob Dylan tune.
Most blues songs are but we tend to relate them to the musician who first really made them popular or (in this case) from who's arrangement the song is referenced from.

To wit, House of the Rising Sun will always be an Animals song to me.

I won't dwell on it, but I tend to agree with Lynch's summation about Kurt's stupidity, of all the people to take such drastic action someone 'who's made it' by every definition we can measure(except his soul) to do that was unbelievable. Not to mention how he did it as well, there are far better ways to leave the world than that.:nw:

I can forgive people who are suffering with a lingering terminal illness doing what they feel is right for themselves and their families so I'm not against euthanasia either institutional or on your own terms. I know I would have no intention of existing as an empty shell with no capacity for thought or able to control my bodily functions.

And back to Nirvana, I don't have any doubt that the fact Kurt did what he did has Added to his legendary status among his fans. I don't think he would be revered as much if he was still with us.

My only comment on Cobain: he was definitely dealing with demons and tortured sole of some kind of which I will never understand. I was not his doctor or anything but I do recall it was documented well before his death that he dealt with chronic severe stomach issues through his childhood until his death. similar to what maybe considered Crohn's disease today.

folks do seem to dismiss the stomach issues as Heroin addicts suffer from a lot.

^^I grew up with nothing but stomach problems Jim...and it was no fun at all. Eventually everything calmed down and I didn't have any trouble once I hit 16. I would never trivialize a serious medical condition like Crohn's which can ruin your life. In Cobain's case he could have afforded the best medical treatment/doctors in the world and you can manage it.(Was he a heroin addict? I never really dug that deep into his life.)

I've always thought it was more to do with Courtney Love than anything else that he gave up on everything, but we'll never really know will we?

I don't think there are overrated bands,
you cannot argue about music taste.. its like arguing about your favorite color :p

I like to hear Nirvana at least once per week.
I grew up listening to them, so I guess that is one of the reasons I like to hear them once in awhile.

yes, bigtime. The profits were to be split 3 ways, and were for a while, but eventually the other two guys gave Kurt 2/3 and they split 1/3, just to keep him happily swimming in selfpity and heroin. Not saying they pushed the smack on him, but rather when he was getting strung out, he'd talk about quitting the band, they each gave up half of their one-third just to keep him happy. interesting/ironic if you think about it since Kurt also liked to bitch about success and money, yet if it wasn't for success and money, the masses wouldnt' have known him, he wouldnt' have been able to afford the best smack money could buy and we wouldn't be having a conversation about how overrated his band is (or isn't).

Just drivel drawn up by the fans who wanted/needed a scapegoat. Some even have gone as far as saying she killed him, or had him killed and it wasn't suicide at all.

Yes, Kurt had mental problems but putting all that aside I really like a lot of Nirvana's music and listen to it fairy regularly. In my mind the band is not overrated.
