I think fans that love absolutely EVERYTHING an artist puts out is trying way too hard to be their biggest fan. >_>

I personally do think that it's possible that the music can sound different depending on how much you enjoy the band. Only reason I say that is, when you're a huge fan of the band, you're used to hearing how the band sounds, and you've gotten comfortable with how the band is, the vocals, the guitars, etc (assuming they keep their sound throughout their albums, which I notice was brought up).

However, I can also see how someone can argue that point. Though I have noticed that if I don't know the band very well, the music doesn't have the same feel in relation to if I have been listening to the band for a long time. Like anything, something new is most certainly different than something "old".

I think it more along the lines goes with knowing the band well, and not knowing the band well.

If we're talking "sound" then maybe it is the overall "feel" as they progress. I'm sure some fans out there loved a band for their earlier basic, raw or unfiltered sound. As soon as that band rises in status, they become ambitious, afford better studios and gear and so on. Result? That primitive or "early" sound is displaced by a more polished even sophisticated product. Next thing you know "sell out" is being thrown about or what happened to that group they loved in the beginning. It happens to every artist. Innocence lost...for both parties.

That's a good point to bring up because most of the time, with classic rock bands specifically, people tend to like the earlier less polished work than if they were to release something in this day and age, which is entirely understandable. If it were me though, and I had/have been a fan of say Black Sabbath for instance, and they decide to make a new album in the coming years, and it sounds more polished than their old work, I wouldn't say they were sell outs, i'd be open minded about it at first, but I would obviously be more inclined to talk about their earlier work. I suppose it just comes down to opinion if anything.

I know a friend who stopped listening to Led-Zeppelin after their second album. He still loves them but refuses to delve into anything live post-1970. Take Aerosmith for example, their earlier efforts is nowhere near the slick, raido friendly stuff they have put out much to the consternation of their hard-core fanbase. "Honkin' For Bobo" is a look back to how they started yet it doesn't have that "old" feel to it. Just a better recording environment more than anything. I'm not sure if you can recreate or capture THAT sound again. Maybe... The PROBLEM nowadays is that there is so much competition even the dinosaurs have to compromise in order to stay relevant and really to ultimately satisfy their record company's bottom line. Really devoted fans roll with the changes good or bad.

This is one of the most important things. And if anything, a fan of a band should at least give the new sound a chance regardless. I am guilty of not giving a band I like a listen because they change their sound, but I always end up going back and giving them a listen and remembering that they are still the band I love, just a bit different.

I agree with Sooty! If you're a REAL fan..and I mean a REAL fan you will listen closer.

Having said that, even real fans need to be realistic and honest with themselves and others if their favorite band or artist created something they didn't care for.

Defending them for the sake of defending them doesn't make sense.

But if the honest opinion is that you like it all...then cool on that too.
