Now I'm certainly not going to read through the 29 pages of this thread but my input on this subject is this:

If it were not for the downloading of music then I would never have found most of my favorite groups, I wouldn't be as knowledgeable or well versed in music as I am, I would not be nearly as into music in general, and really the vast majority of my passion of music and involvement of any kind on this forum is because of my use for Limewire.

Limewire is littered with viruses and other crap including pornography that was uploaded by people working for the movie/music companies. I had a "Legal" program that allowed you to download music a few years ago and enjoyed the experience, learned quite a bit about all this stuff.

However, all the Upload sites like Rapidshare are becoming far more strictly regulated when it comes to copywrite protected media, they have given out personal ISP info before and will do it again if threatened with legal action.

Hence why I use torrents. The improved (not perfect, but miles above limewire) safety is worth the marginal extra downloads it uses, and the only real hitch is when nobody seeds.

And I'm with CH, if not for downloading, I'd probably have less than half the music that I have now. And I'm very grateful for that, because some of it is among the best I've ever heard.

Here is my philosophy.......I have supported the music industry for over 35 years now. I have supported numerous musicians over the years by attending concerts, some musicians I have seen numerous times. I purchased over 350 vinyl albums, 2 boxes of 45's, about 100 or so 8 track tapes, approx. 200 cassetts, and I still continue to buy CD's.

I feel absolutely no guilt what-so-ever downloading and replacing my old vinyl collection or any other music I have already purchased.

I will download a new artist's music, which usually isn't in the best music format to begin with, to sample the music. If I like the music, I will buy the CD, which is recorded in the best format.

That is my philosophy as well.

Do the people who oppose downloading music also oppose watching online shows and downloading films?

Yes, I'm opposed to downloading films without proper payment. Online shows don't necessarily violate any copyrights. I'd be opposed to the ones that do though.

^^That doesn't surprise me in the least Hep.

I have sampled some movies, and if I like them I buy the DVD. Most of the ones available are compressed anyway, so the official factory release is a much higher quality.

Anyone who has used a VCR to tape television shows or movies is guilty of the same thing, again that is why there is a "Levy" on all blank tape etc., whether you are recording your own home movies or a TV show the media companies get paid. I am surprised at you Hep you never mention that fact, and it is not a trivial amount of money either that everyone pays no matter what you intend record on your video equipment.:nw:

Well you shouldn't be surprised. It's another of those out of sight, out of mind cases. I never bothered to get another TV after mine went on the blink in 1992 so I never think about those things.

The newest Limewire Pro Beta has anti-virus protection built in.

^^That's an improvement Shadow, but I prefer other options to any Limewire sites now.

Hep,,,you should get a TV, and a blue ray player, then hook up your stereo and watch some of your favorite live concerts, you don't Have to subscribe to cable or satellite.
