Not to be a Scrooge or anything but I find myself getting less excited about Record Store Day every year. Each year I look at all of the exclusive albums being released that day and think "Well that would be cool to have." but instantly get disappointed when I find out that 1. It's in color vinyl, which I prefer to avoid and 2. The quantity of them is exceedingly low. The focus is becoming much more about these collectible pieces and how much their worth than vinyl itself and it bugs me. Each year there are more and more exclusive releases being released in fewer and fewer quantities and I don't feel like that's a way to actually share the music as much as it is just a way to dramatically shift the hype and supply vs. demand dynamic. For example, Wu Tang Clan released an album with only ONE copy. That is a gross extreme of my point but still. Another example is the Dresden Dolls who finally released their first album on vinyl, which I have been waiting for for years. (Granted it was on colored vinyl but I could overlook that in this case) Anyway, it was only released with 25,000 copies and none of the stores I went to had it. That means I can't get it for who knows how long plain and simple and that just sucks for someone who is a big fan of their music like myself and others I am sure.
Anyway, these are just my thoughts on the event...
