After the Images & Words and Awake albums, I confess that I kind of phased out of listening to Dream Theater. But the Octavarium and Train of Thought albums brought me back for a little while. But then I kind of got away from them again.

I heard the first song from the upcoming album and I don't think it is going to make me run out and buy the album. The song was okay but it didn't really hit home for me beyond that.

Their last great album was still with Mike - Black Clouds and Silver Linings.
Most people consider that a fairly limp end to the MP Era, and that maybe he was right, that the band needed a break.

The Mangini Era is filled with excellent albums and great tunes. Not saying you did this, but a lot of people dismissed it out of hand, and I never understood that. I actually liked what they were doing, and I've ultimately been lukewarm about MP coming back. I think the way that the band is run can certainly use his input, but musically, not so much.

The ultimate key to Night Terror will be being able to latch onto the instrumental section, and that ain't going to happen in only a couple of listens.

I saw Dream Theater for the first time tonight. I really enjoyed the show.

I had looked up the set list from the previous show as a guide for what to expect but they changed up the songs a bit in the first "act" of the show. I have to say that bummed me out a bit because one of the dropped songs was "As I Am" which I was looking forward to hearing.

But man, I loved hearing "Octavarium" live!

I have 'Images' and 'Awake'.....never bought anything else ....they are a bit too hard edged for me at times. I have heard a few of the later ones like 'Metropolis' which people rave about and heard 'Train' and 'Octavarium' also. I've played tracks from a few others on you tube.
For those interested this is the official Prog Archives link https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=378 It has a nice long bio about how they started ... etc.
The newest called 'Parasomnia' received 4.17 stars from the members. Only 'Images' and 'Metropolis' got more stars....'Six Degrees' and "Awake' got 4.16 from fans.
I have all 3 'Liquid Tension Experiment' cd's which is a spin off with Portnoy, Petrucci, Jordan Rudes and Tony Levin. I actually like those a bit more since they are more fusiony heavy prog rock imho (but listed as prog metal on PA), but one can certainly hear a good deal of Dream Theater in the mix.
BTW ..the highest rated DT lp on PA is Live Scenes From New York at 4.57 stars.

Wanted to add that I liked the 2 tracks posted above Night Terror and Midnight Messiah but preferred the proggier parts more than the chugga chugga metal parts. The other 2 live tracks seemed a bit dull to me as to song structures and I cant say La Bries vocals are very interesting either....just being honest .
