My wife and I had a great time with Deb’s brother John at the Heart/Cheap Trick show last night…This was actually my 6th time seeing Cheap Trick Live and my 6th time seeing Heart Live as well. The first time I saw Cheap Trick In concert was 9/23/1978 at the old Century Theater in downtown Buffalo.(that was the last show ever held at the Century Theater…) and opening that show was a band called 1994….
Last night Cheap Trick was Rockin’ the House(with Domestic Problems)…No, they didn’t play that tune last night but they definitely Rocked the House from their opening song “Hello There”(From their “In Color” album) which was followed by “Elo Kiddies”, “Big Eyes”, & “Look Out”…Cheap Trick played for almost an hour Rockin’ their way through 14 tunes including their classic cover of “Ain’t That a Shame”, “My Baby Loves to Rock”(one of my favorite Cheap Trick tunes), “The Flame”, “I Want You to Want me”, “Dream Police”, “Surrender”, & they closed their set with “Goodnight”…
Heart hit the stage at 9:30 and despite lead singer Ann Wilson being in a wheel chair(she had just beat cancer last year and recently fell and broke her elbow in 3 places) they put on an incredible performance. Unfortunately, due to my back problems and Deb’s brother’s knee problems we missed the last 3 tunes which were: “Sand”, “The Ocean”(I would have loved to hear their take on this Zeppelin tune…They have always done great covers of Led Zeppelin tunes in the past and that is one of my favorite Zep tunes… Earlier that night they played an amazing cover of Zeppelin’s “Going to California”), and “Barracuda”…Anyway, the first time I seen Heart live was 10/13/1982 at the Buffalo War Memorial Auditorium with John Cougar opening that show… Tonight Heart opened with the title track of their classic 1980 album “Bebe Le Strange”(which is my favorite Heart tune) followed by their 1980’s mega hit “Never”. The next tune is arguably their most popular tune “Magic Man” from their debut album “Dreamboat Annie”(this tune has always been special to me because it always sounds so fantastic cranked up on a great stereo system)…Up next were a couple of tunes from 1977(Love Alive and Little Queen)… An incredible part of the show was when Heart went back to 1978’s “Magazine” album and played their hit “Straight On” & as the bass was kicking towards the end they shocked the crowd by blending in a killer version of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”…They played an awesome acoustic set of “Dog and Butterfly”, “Dreamboat Annie”, and Zep’s “Going to California”followed by a cool little acoustic tune instrumental Nancy Wilson wrote for Eddie Van Halen titled “4 Edward”….Heart played their showstoppers like “These Dreams”, “Crazy On You”, “Mistral Wind” and a nice little Medley of “Alone” & “What About Love” before their Encores…
Overall, it was an outstanding performance by both bands and actually this was the second time I seen Heart and Cheap Trick perform together.(The first time I seen them together was 11/24/1990 at the Aud).
