Just to show you how wrong you are, The Commodores definitely played guitar...with some fat bass lines. The Commodores managed to make it into the top 10 rock charts, plus the disco charts, AND the pop charts in 1977 with:

I was never a big disco fan (I was always at the rock clubs, not the dance music clubs), but I have come to appreciate it more. I now like many of the songs mentioned here. This one is one of my favorites:

It was easy to jump on that "disco sucks" wagon in the 80's, but not so much today. "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor has become an anthem for divorcee's.....and that was definitely a song introduced during the disco era.


Another song of the disco era that has resurfaced is "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge

That is awesome! I have always wondered what other countries had as their own flavour of disco, but have never taken the time to explore....

Yup, some European countries had few disco bands/artists, for example Patrick Hernandez from France.

But the biggest success disco ever had was... in Italy! Albano & Romina Power - Sempre Sempre is my favourite.

I know! I said earlier I'm mostly between blues rock and black metal, but seriously - knowledge of some disco obscures and even the latest post scares the shit out of me.

I agree with Magic it was plain old fun dance music specifically designed for the club scene. I still have some compilation albums laying around with my favorites from this era.
