Deep Purple (Official Thread)

I like Perfect Strangers a lot. Rapture of the Deep was the last I heard and it was disappointing. Don Airey makes a reasonable replacement for Jon Lord, but Steve Morse is a far cry from Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan's lyrics are beginning to sound a bit awkward. Purple were Lord and Blackmore's band, so it doesn't work without them and now seems like the Gillan Glover band.

I could just not get into any of the later DP albums like I did "Machine Head" and "Fireball". The last good Purple record for me was "Burn". I should probably try to take a listen to some of the newer material again and see if I can get more into it.
Love Deep Purple though, those early Purple albums are legendary and the Rock Hall of Fame should be ashamed.

Indeed it's embarrassing to see rappers and pop stars in any rock music HOF before many of the legends.

I love early Purple myself, but like Martin Perfect Strangers was an album I really enjoyed and took me by surprise when it came out.

Personally I love Steve Morse, his work in the Dixie Dregs is first class. Losing Jon Lord was a massive blow, but if the band wants to carry on and Ian, Roger and Paice want to keep DP alive and touring good on 'em I say.

I can see why plenty can't get into the latter DP albums, it certainly was a different sound for them at that stage. If I was to give a top 5 favourite albums myself though it would be in order from 5-1.

I notice that you keep praising THE BATTLE RAGES ON album Riffer and it's OK up2 a point but in Deep Purple's canon of work it's viewed by 'the man in black' (and his view is sacred with all things Deep Purple) as crap!.

To you its crap and as I said its fine and I understand why people may dislike it but I love it in fact its as said one of my favourite albums. Just gotta accept that you and others dislike it but people like me enjoy that era of the band. Its all about opinion. My list was all opinion and nothing else, my preferences. Of course I am going to praise an album I like. Don't get me wrong all those 70s albums I love but there just happens to be some of the later era I prefer.

Think if there is an era I have to say is my least favourite it would be the albums before In Rock but I'll give those a shot again.

Yeah i know wot you mean Riff about thoughs Deep Purple MkI albums and i thought the same as you for 30 plus years BUT in the last 4-5 years i've gone back and started to listen to them early albums again with 'open ears' and i must admit they ain't as bad to listen to as i remembered they were?.

The 'magnificent musicianship' between Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord & Ian Paice cuts right through thoughs early Deep Purple albums!.
