I have always liked the guitar and before the Beatles, Stones and everyone else I used to listen to instrumental albums by Dwayne Eddy or The Ventures. But one 45 that I played many times was a guitar instrumental called "Scratchy" by Travis Wamack. Back then I had no idea how he got his guitar to make that sound.
I still have the single in my music room.

I just listened to the 45, last night.

I managed to save about a hundred singles from back in the day and some of them are a little strange (The Eggplant That Ate Chicago, for example).
But, Scratchy was one that I listened to a lot.
Back before 'stomp boxes' a guitarist's rig consisted of a guitar, a chord and an amp.
I read an interview years ago where a guitarist intertwined a piece of paper between the strings down by the bridge to get a deadened, gritty sound.

Not really a "rock" instrumental, but a memorable one. I thought it'd be a nice tribute to Marvin Hamlisch, who passed away today. RIP.

I read that he was only 68 years old...the Entertainer will always be the song I think of when I think of MH.

:rip: Marvin.
