Brian Wilson Working on New Album for Old Record Company

wilson.jpg

Brian Wilson is recording his 11th solo album, which will be released through Capitol Music Group, the company that put out the original Beach Boys hits more than 50 years ago. His longtime bandmates Al Jardine and David Marks will join him on the record.

According to a press release, Wilson is currently recording the album at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Studios with a session band that includes studio vets Don Was and Jim Keltner, as well as Vinnie Colaiuta and Tal Wilkenfeld, who are part of Jeff Beck‘s band.

Speaking of the guitar hero, Beck will also be featured on the new album, which has no release date yet. “When I watched Jeff Beck perform ‘Surf’s Up’ to honor me at the MusiCares Person of the Year event in 2005, I knew I had to find a way to work with him,” Wilson said. “He absolutely blew my mind, and we’ve been friends ever since. Jeff’s incredible guitar playing is exactly what I want for my new album and I’m also looking forward to performing live with him soon.”

Wilson posted a photo on Instagram a few weeks ago featuring himself and Beck chilling in the studio. He didn’t waste much time getting back to work after the Beach Boys’ successful 50th-anniversary tour last year. (They also released their 29th album, ‘That’s Why God Made the Radio,’ in 2012.)

He started writing immediately after the tour wrapped and reconnected with the record company that released the Beach Boys’ music (Wilson’s past couple of solo records were on the Walt Disney label). “I was really moved by the fans’ excitement about the Beach Boys’ album and tour last year,” Wilson said. “It charged me up and my head was full of music. I just couldn’t wait to get back into the studio to let it out.”

Beach Boys ‘Made In California’ Box Set Announced

Capitol Records
Last year, as the Beach Boys kicked off their 50th anniversary celebration, a multi-disc box set was supposed to be part of that. It was put on hold, until now.

‘Made In California’ was originally announced to be released in early 2012 as the kick off of the 50th celebration. A variety of issues held up its release, but now, Capitol Records has announced a street date of Aug. 27.

The set will contain over seven and a half hours of music, including 60 previously unreleased tracks, along with the hits and album tracks of the band’s 50 year run. Included will be alternate takes, live recordings, and demos, as well as some radio and television performances.

There were reports early on that Mike Love, the notorious stick in the mud, had demanded certain unreleased tracks be taken off. Apparently, it has remained intact. In a statement on the box, Love said, “This box set captures the evolution of a dream which started with a family singing Everly Brothers songs around a piano, to creating the harmonies that fans would carry in their hearts for a lifetime.”

‘Made In California’ will be packaged to look like a high school yearbook, and will include a reproduction of an essay, titled ‘My Philosophy,’ written by Brian Wilson in 1959, while still a student. The package also includes photos, memorabilia, classic Beach Boys artwork and more from the bands archives, as well as notations from Love, Wilson, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks.

Earlier this year, it was announced and Love and Johnston were set to carry on with the Beach Boys name, leaving Jardine, Marks and Wilson in the dust. Since then, Wilson has re-signed with Capitol Records and is working on a new album, with some help from Marks and Jardine. He is also hitting the road with the duo.

I break out my green Capitol "Smiley Smile" from time to time and it always amazes me.What a painstakingly accurate job Brian did with the vocal and musical arrangements.I don't know how or why this one was so overlooked at the time of release or how it did so poorly on Billboard for a Beach Boys offering(#40).I did see in "Beach Boys:An American Family" that the band blamed it on poor marketing, but the work is so tremendous, you wouldn't think it's showing in pop culture would have been so greatly affected by this.I heard they've recently uncovered the original tapes for the "real" "Smile" project. In my mind, these would be better than the 2004 officially released version because they were made at a time when the ideas were all still perfectly fresh in Wilson's provocative mind.Gotta go now and chow down my vegetables!

Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck are teaming up for a summer tour. Al Jardine and David Marks will be part of the band. I hope Mike Love is kicking himself as he plays his umpteenth county fair and/or Indian casino.

"God Only Knows" has already previously proven itself as quite the inspirational number. Now we see it has the power to influence human unification, much like the Beatles' worldwide 1967 broadcast where they introduced the world to "All You Need Is Love"....................
