Does what a band wears/looks like matter?

It shouldn't but it does. Someone already said it but the music video launched some careers and nipped others in the bud. It changed everything. So many performers men and women would be no where if they didn't garner a certain look. It doesn't necessarily have to be sexually attractive it just has to fit a certain demographic.
I honestly always loved early Kiss for their music but I can't say that the special attention I payed to them had nothing to do with their wild appearence. When I was younger I hated it when metal bands cut their hair off. It was like tribal betrayal so while I'm completely over any feelings of visual cues influencing my music taste I can personally relate to the problem.

The bad thing with this is that it is being more and more influentiasl in mainstream music and as a result talent for music is being replaced by talent for image.

well...I think some kind of image is necessary...I doubt KISS would of got anywhere without the paint and leather, same goes with Poison, If Bon Jovi had buck teeth and a bent nose his sales might not have been so impressive....and as for image in a live setting, gimme some sorta stage setting everytime, 5 blokes sitting down in their jeans playing doesnt work for me ( for the most part, the Eagles doing their sit down gig were brilliant)

If the look accentuates the message of the band then by all means do it up (like Primus). It's when the look becomes the focal point of the band that there's a problem (like KISS).

Yea, but the thing with KISS is, their music is neither deep or thought provoking.

They'd never admit it, of course, but I'm pretty sure the visual was to kind of gloss over the fact that their songwriting and musicianship is average.

Even fans like myself will admit that KISS' lyrics aren't what anyone would call thought provoking.

I'm also not foolish enough to think their songs are, musically, jaw dropping, complex arrangements.

But, they've sold, what, almost 100,000,000 records? That's success, no matter what angle you look at it.
